I use ClarisDraw, and find it is very good for most purposes. The bitmap layer is a little basic - no anti-aliasing brushes, and colour selection limited to 256 colours even when in a 16 or 32 bit graphics mode. But the drawing layer is excellent in my opinion. It is particularly good for diagrams and schematics etc, having sophisticated rulers, ability to enter coordinates from the keyboard etc. Less good for 'arty' freehand work, although it does have proper bezier curves. Still significantly better than the drawing package of ClarisWorks. If there was a web page for that scheme, I'd point to it from a new section below 'the lost' on my 'sated' page. Avesh's scheme is one of the poorest I've ever seen, with a number of classic scheme problems: missing resources (for which we can blame the Eclipse scheme, which is itself missing a number of icm4 resources), system heap and purgable bits set incorrectly (for which we can blame Avesh for not understanding system requirements, and which is likely to be the cause of your problems - you can fix these yourself with ResEdit), non-existent support for low colour depths... However, Avesh's desktop theme is available all over the planet on info-mac as: /info-mac/gui/aveshs-desktop-theme.hqx download and use at your own risk. (what has happened to mac-umich? They did some QC on submissions.) The abstract of that submission (the plaintext before the binhex, repeated in the abstracts summary in that directory) says: From: axj133@email.psu.edu (Avesh Jain) He should get around to posting an update. > It would seem, you see, that the Avesh scheme causes WordPerfect PPC to > crash every time without fail. This doesn't surprise me, although it's unusual to see a colour-scheme-caused problem be so regularly reproducible. > The creator really ought to be informed--and the public warned. I've been talking on the Kaleidoscope scheme designers' mailing list about the ability of badly-created colour schemes to crash Macs for a couple of months now - see the archives under: for more on this, as well as discussion of good and bad Kaleidoscope colour schemes. A number of scheme authors participating there now have the knack of building solid, safe, attractive, and useful colour schemes. Anyway, caveat emptor. In this case, Avesh's scheme is worth slightly less than what you paid for it. you install it, it crashes your Mac, you trash it - evolution in action. There are two solutions that I am aware of: (1) Use Acrobat Distiller to convert the .ps file into .pdf format and print the .pdf file. Distiller is commercial software and is part of the Acrobat Pro package. This is the method I use with my Personal LaserWriter L/S (Quickdraw printer). You will also be able to preview the postscript file using Acrobat Reader. (2) The freeware alternative is a program called GhostScript, which can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.cs.wisc.edu/pub/ghost/aladdin/mac/. Information about GhostScript can be found at http://www.glyphic.com/glyphic/projects/macgs.html. -- Eric Pepper pepper@telcomplus.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 23 Feb 97 07:47:36 +0000 From: Ked Shayer Subject: L2 Cache Your computr should speed up majorly >Recently I added 32MB DIMMs and 256k L2 cache to my 7200 >machine. I'm quite sure that Marc did not write either of those lines as they appeared in the digest. Look folks, it's almost the turn of the century here. I've asked for this several times before and there has been no motion. Eudora has been able to properly parse MIME digests for quite a while here, and it would be able to turn those quoted-printable characters (the "=A9" and "=46") into readable characters if you would just include 2, or maybe 3, additional lines in some messages: 1. If the original message had a "Content-Transfer-Encoding" header which had other than the value "7bit", include it with the message in the digest. 2. If the original message had a "Content-Type" header which was either was not "text/plain" or had a charset parameter other than "charset=us-ascii", include it with the message in the digest. 3. If either 1 or 2 above is true, include a "MIME-Version: 1.0" header with the message in the digest. There are loads of other things you can do, but just these simple steps will solve 99% of the problems we see now, and I'm all for going one step at a time. Now, you have to be somewhat smart about this because some of the messages you get are multipart messages which include the file attached, but in that case you take the headers from the text part instead of the main body of the message. Please, you've gone so far to make the digest itself in MIME format so that those of us who can handle MIME can see things in a nice orderly way. Just take that next step and life will be wonderful. pr -- Pete Resnick QUALCOMM Incorporated Work: (217)337-6377 / Fax: (217)337-1980 [Yeah, I know. The "send-PS-to-printer" utility won't work. What you need is a PostScript interpreter; something that will convert the PS code in the file you have into a form that the non-PS printer understands. Here are some options: Adobe Distiller will convert PostScript file to PDF, which can then be printed from Acrobat Reader. This approach has the advantage of retaining the high resolution of the original document [for the most part]. It has the disadvantage of costing money. Distiller as a separate product costs around $200 last I looked*. However, it comes with some other Adobe products; if you have Illustrator or PageMaker, you may already have it. GhostScript will convert from PostScript to a variety of bitmapped graphics formats, which you could then print from some other program like GraphicConverter. This approach has the advantage of being free. It has the disadvantage of requiring the use of a tool [GhostScript] that apparently many people have problems getting to work [it has always worked fine for me]. Further, it will probably not retain the high resolution of the original, unless you have oodles of RAM and a fast machine. Transverter Pro converts between PS and other graphics formats. I've never used it, so can't offer much more than that. Disadvantage: costs money. There's a demo available. StyleScript is a PostScript preprocessor for StyleWriters and HP inkjets. Disadvantage: costs money. There's a demo available. Image Alchemy will translate PS/EPSF/PDF to 75+ image formats. Disadvantage: costs money. There's a page at the website that lets you use it over the web. Cool. chazl 02.21.97 ------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Feb 1997 10:51:11 -0500 From: "Randall C. Symantec Tech Support: My "norton.tech" at applelink doesn't work any more, and I can't finger out how to send a note to those critters via the Symantec web site, and I'll be consigned to hell before I pay 900-line costs to call them. Those folk have been helpful in the past. I've done my poor best to not trouble them unduly. Is there an e-mail address that works? My current concern relates to Leslye's new Kodak DC50 digital camera. The accompanying software (necessary to convert Kodak's proprietary pic format into something standard), did a marvelous number on us. Doing a "save as" something useful like jpeg got three non-desired results: a system crash, an invisible non-utile jpeg with the name one tried to save-as, and another invisible file named "GroundHogDay...etc..." that claimed to be a PICT from the Kodak software. The folks who wrote Kodak's software (Pixworks) responded to my query by saying there was a big problem with Apple's ColorSync 2.1, and we should trash that extension if it wasn't critical. Only on 68k Macs. Yup, that worked. My respondent also said she had heard of a GroundHogsDay virus, and I should maybe ask Symantec (whose SAM 4.5 with Feb 97 defs raised no hoot or holler) about it. I tried to ask Symantec. I couldn't do it. Thus my query here. 2. News: I was on one of my rare road trips yesterday and tried my PB5300's connection to the world last evening. Via AT&T worldnet, I connected quite well to my home-base mail and to the Virginia Tech mainframe. News failed. It seems that "news.vt.edu" is available only to folk with a "vt.edu" address. I tried what passes for "news" from the AT&T Netscape-2 (Gawd! Will they get up to date in this life) home base and couldn't figure out what I got. Seemed to be three un-named newsgroups solely related to AT&T. Be still, my heart. Do y'all have any suggestions for publicly available news servers? I'd prefer the uncensored stripe. As I said at the University Computer Policy Committee, we're a university. Censorship is the last thing we should support. It is a tad unfortunate that the strongest support I got for that statement was from the Internal Auditor. The comp center director's support was related to the difficulty of keeping track of what groups were naughty. The student rep and several faculty were all in favor of active censorship. That was not the only time I've been embarrassed by my colleagues, but it hurt a lot. I suspect I couldn't care less about the "alt.naughtyword" newsgroup, but I object to anyone saying I can't read it. Yes, I admit to being a (US only, to my knowledge) First Amendment type. I might despise what you say or show, but I will defend to the death your right to say/show it. Well, maybe not to the death. Maybe that's the problem.
