CDFinder is shareware (15 US$ for a single user license) and quite popular already. The new version contains quite some features: - A complete new window was necessary to display the following new preferences: - CDFinder can now ignore invisible objects when creating a catalog. - StuffIt archives can now be scanned. - It is possible to turn off the display of some columns. - While opening an archive during the creation of a catalog, CDFinder displays its name in the progress dialog. - A new icon is used for archives that are scanned. If a catalog window displays the contents of an archive, a new little symbol close to the column header "Name" is drawn. - CDFinder now displays its dialogs and windows much better in Japanese versions of the Mac OS! XTension works with hundreds of products are already available from catalogs and from your local Radio Shack. From light dimmers to laser beams and pet feeders, you'll love the things that your Mac can do with XTension. X-10 is the 17 year old technology for sending control signals to lights and appliances over your house power wiring. Using simple and inexpensive modules, you can do everything from dimming lamps to drawing the drapes in the morning. Notice that this freeware version works only with the CP290 from X-10. This device is a transmit only controller, and cannot receive X-10 signals from the powerline. You can use it to control devices, but you cannot receive signals from devices such as motion sensors. Versions of XTension for other controllers such as the two-way CM11A are available from home automation distributors along with the controller and all the gadgets you can want. This is for compatibility with 24 bit cards like the ][e emulator (ie Quadra 605.) This may be for accessing > 4gb, but I don't know. Here's the curious part... boot resource #3 has been significantly modified to (amongst other things), check for 24 bit mode, and if set, switch to 32 bit and reboot. If this resource is hacked to disable this, the box comes up with a wierd dialog that says "Bluets and Granola Bars", which is found in DSAT resource #0, along with the rest of the string "Make a chewy snack". Note that a boot won't complete this way (the finder falls over). It gets better... In ALRT resource #-16501, the following dialog appears: "/!\ You must hold down the command (%%), control, and escape keys to quit Apple IIe mode before you can shut down your computer. [ OK ]" ------------------------------------------------------------------------- My first call to Apple tech support was received by a fellow by the name of David who gave me a "deer in the headlights" response, and when I asked him why Apple didn't make it clear that 32 bit would be forced on in 7.6, he actually hung up on me. A call back was met with more receptive personnel, however, no answer as of yet as to why this is. The question is that based on -16501 and DSAT 0, there appears to be a 32bit cookie in there somewhere, along with support for the IIe board. Does anyone out there know how to enable this? Any clues? The project is nearly complete and we are wondering if anyone is interested in such a thing. More specifically, the product will allow you to continuously digitize 4 inputs (8 bit) through an external box that hooks up to your Mac via the microphone port. Software decodes and graphs the inputs at a user selectable rate. Similar products exist, but they are expensive and usually tie up a serial port. We are hoping to hit a price point much lower than other interface boxes. One possible use would be to graph the inside/outside temperature and the barometric pressure. This is a question about what to do with multiple page paperport files once exported. When paperport exports a multi-page document it saves the filename as a folder and then names each page consecutively Page_1_TIFF, Page_2_TIFF, etc. Not wanting lots of files with the same name, I tried batch processing with FilterTop, but I can't find a filter which will simply rename, the filter copies the file and appends, e.g. a new suffix or prefix. I went over to the Filtertop web page and noticed that everything seems _old_ (like from a year or more ago), so maybe this software is no longer in developent. So, questions are: 1. is anything going on with FilterTop any more? 2. does anyone out there have a filter that renames but doesn't generate new files? 3. any other ideas about batch processing file names on our beloved (but batch impaired) macs? Unfortunately, he is experiencing a problem I've never heard of before: He pulls the four 256K SIMMs and replaces them with four 1MB/80ns SIMMs that were operating successfully in a Mac Classic, and he also changes a jumper setting associated with the RAM boost. He reboots and all looks good. It properly reports the amount of RAM he has installed and, for as long as he continues actively using his Mac, it continues to operate as expected. However, if the Mac sits idle for more than a couple of minutes, it crashes. The style of crash varies... sometimes it just freezes, sometimes it produces a bomb, sometimes is restarts, and sometimes it goes into an audible video jitter. He's tried various combinations of SIMMs (2, 2.5, 4MB) and he's swapped in 1MB SIMMs borrowed from another Mac. All attempts over 1MB produce the same result: OK while actively being used... crash after a couple of minutes idle. I'll emphasise... this does NOT happen when he's got it loaded with only 1MB of RAM, idle or not. The jumper he's playing with is labelled something like "2/4MB to 1MB" and it's able to straddle two of three pins (or non, of course). He thought he knew how to set the jumper for this job... but on further questioning... he's not so sure he's got this right. Can a bad jumper setting cause this nonsense? Or is something else going on here? System 6.0.5 (Finder 6.1.5). No Extras! He's also tried wiping his HD and reinstalling from scratch.
