Alan Gentle ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 6 Nov 1997 02:33:09 +1000 From: Brett Crozier Subject: 'Dodgy' SIMM causes bloated system -- comments? Hi all, I just saw a very strange thing happen with a friend's Quadra 610 -- I thought I'd share it and ask if anyone had ever seen anything similar. She'd just got it, and had a 32 mb SIMM installed (4 mb soldered on board) taking it up to 36 mb. Later she found problems running larger apps and, checking the About box, discovered the System Software seemed to be taking up about 28 mb. After reinstalling the system a couple of times, we tried removing the SIMM, and the system seemed to drop back to a reasonable size. Another clean install without the SIMM produced a similar result but, after reinsertion, the System jumped back up to around 28 mb. Strangely enough, throughout this the About box always reported the correct amount of memory for what we thought we had installed. The SIMM seems the reasonable suspect, no? Does anyone have a clue as to how the system was fooled into thinking it was running at 28 mb? This has got me interested -- any hints would be greatly appreciated. Reading your flame, it's clear you aren't entirely without blame yourself. I can appreciate your anger at being told that your old modem did not qualify for a rebate (though I'm surprised you weren't warned of this in the small print to the ad.) However, I think it's a little unreasonable to blame the modem simply because you didn't get faster speeds. I still use a 14.4 modem, and I've figured it's probably not worthwhile getting a faster one. And that's taking into account the fact that here in England, I pay about 7 cents a minute for local 'phone calls. Unless you live right on top of the telephone exchange, line noise and congestion on the net -- not modem speed -- can often limit on how fast data travels down the line to your Mac. In the case of 56k modems, this is especially true. These devices offer no advantage if there's more than (I think) two miles of copper between you and the telephone exchange. For a complete explanation, check out back issues of TibBits. >However, they have pretended not to receive it and refuse to give > me a refund. I have been plagued with a continuing problem where the event system appears to get into a confused state. This is most noticable with Microsoft Word 5.1a where the "I" bar cursur does not change to an arrow when moving off the Window. Other symptoms generally appear as being an event behind, so that extra mouse clicks are needed to perform other simple actions, such as to bring up a dialogue box or print a document. Eudora also gets into trouble, with the Window not "filling up" with information. When I try to shut the machine down I get a system message "Cannot close down because application unknown refuses to quit". Re-boot usually clears the problem until next time something screws the system up. But I have to re-boot about 5 times a day. I have a Powerbook 1400c, with OS 7.5.3 and a fairly huge set of applications, including Now 6.7 and Norton 3.1; all mostly, apparently, reputable commercial software. On each restart of my Mac, since installing OS8, I find in the trash a "rescued from..." folder with a file named "icon." The file has no resources (when opened in resedit) but claims to use a block of space on the hard drive. I tried opening the file in photoshop and bbedit. Photoshop spins up but refuses to open the file ("wrong type") and bbedit just opens an empty file. I've also noticed that when I copy the entire contents of a mac folder to an ftp site, there is an "icon" file (invisible on the mac) that shows up in the remote directory. Now with v 7.5.3 OS on a Performa Powermac neither, I can bring up the disk contents, but I cannot read the file. Right now, we have them networked with PhoneNet connectors, but it's dreadfully slow, especially for printing on the two StyleWriters we have. What I would *like* to do is: Have the most powerful computer be a server and keep all the programs there and have all the other computers access applications from it. I would like some security and even localized storage for each user (I abhor diskettes, really). I know I can do this using PhoneNet, but I also know that running big programs through such a network is paralyzingly slow. So, I want to go to ethernet (I think), but I would also like to use TCP/IP so that I can eventually set up an internal intranet so that I can teach the students about the Web and stuff.
