Dear Digest readers, In an amazing display of the power of computing Eudora Pro 4.1b54 now reads digests attachments in the listserv version of the digest and makes them into mailboxes that can then be read message for message as if it were a real e-mail box. Remember this is a beta, which means its liable to crash periodically, but considering it is a beta who knows how long Qualcomm will keap this feature. Get it while its still hot! I have never been able to reliably use Spacesaver with any system version on my PowerMac 7200/75. I have always ended up with Type 10 and Type 1 errors trying to use it. Also Aladdin, in its infinite wisdom seems to have made the upgrade to its new version only available with a mailin rebate. Similarly Dataviz's upgrade from 9.7 to 10.0 is only available by mailin rebate. Both are packages I'd like to upgrade, but don't want to have to pay full price and wait 13 weeks for the rebate to be sent to me. That's how long before I usually get rebate checks. By the time I get a rebate check I might have moved, or not be using the software anymore. Also rebate coupons often are missing in the packaging of software I get upgraded. So my other question, does anyone know how to get the rebate price from Aladdin or DataViz without having to mail in the rebate? Thank you. I would strongly urge you to use PlusMaker and PlusMaximizer from Alsoft to do your conversion from HFS to HFS+. You will NOT have to reformat or reinitialize your system, thus you won't have to rebuild the drive and restore all the data. (But have a backup anyway.) Alsoft's utilities will change the formatting from Standard to Extended "underneath" the information on the disk. It's really very good. Alsoft sells the bundle for about $US 39.95. CD: original 1980's style music CD, or any generic CD. CD-R: CD-Recordable; recordable, but not erasable or re-writable. Generally multi-session compatible, which means you can write in several sessions, though with a substantial penalty of lost space because of overhead (perhaps 50 megs per extra session?!). But whatever's on the CD-R is there to stay. Readable in most newer drives of 4X or better; may be unreliable or even unreadable in some drives, even newer ones. CD-RW: CD-Re-Writable; does everything a CD-R does, but can be partially or fully erased and re-written, just like a hard disk. Readable in most drives of the last year or so, perhaps 16X or better; may be unreliable or even unreadable in some drives, even newer ones. > I'm looking for such a storage solution in the near future, does > anyone have recommendations (cost and compatibility are important) for > good machines to buy? You can also set it to only change certain files, etc. There are many options. Also you can make a lot of other changes that would normally require ResEdit. A very handy set of utilities. The Power Computing CD-ROM drives seem to have a lot of problems. I had similar things happening with my Power Tower Pro. Things like audio CD's quitting half way through a track (only some CD's, others play OK), and some software CD's refusing to mount. I solved it by taking the drive out and blowing an air hose through it. This totally cured it and it's been running OK for about 4 months now, but just yesterday another audio CD quit on me, so it looks like another trip to the air hose. There are at least 4 fans in this machine, so it probably sucks in a lot of dirt. When I open the drawer of the CD-ROM drive and hold a tissue paper in front, it trys to suck it right into the opening. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1998 13:36:02 -0800 From: Roy Subject: Info-Mac Digest V16 #223 >I have a large collection of files that I'd like to change the >modification and creation dates. The rare disk-destruction problem with 8.1 and 8.5 has been identified (by Umax/SuperMac!) as a mutual incompatibility between Norton Disk Doctor 4.0 and FWB Hard Disk Toolkit 2.5.0-2.5.2. It has been fixed with NDD 4.01 and HDT 2.5.3. Note that some versions of Apple's formatter may have also experienced the problem. I did and dumped netscape from my hard drive after getting my mail and address into outlook express. This mac has never worked this good. Haven't had any crashes or lost data. The only problem I'm having is I can not set up the dialer part of mac internet. I use ppp connect scripts to connect to Bucknell. I still must use free ppp program to dial in becouse when I use the set up asst. It ask for the location of the scripts and i can not find them. The first one is easy: Open your 'General Controls' control panel and look for a checkbox which says "show desktop when in background", make sure it is checked. I think this feature was meant for slower computers that redraw the screen so slowly that you may want to skip the redraw on applications your are not using. The second happens to me all the time. Look in your application menu. If you see a flashing finder icon, you have run out of available memory. You either have too many applications open, have given too much ram to one application or you operating system takes so much ram that there is little left to run programs in. Keep in mind that Macs with the PowerPC processor will use more ram if virtual memory is turned off in the 'Memory' contol panel. Also, Apple claims that Mac OS 8.5 has a memory leak that is fixed by upgrading to 8.5.1 Good Luck Marlon Deason marlond@earthlink.net ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 19 Dec 1998 20:12:47 +0000 From: "Chris Reed, BBR" Subject: Where to find SyQuest Utilities or equivalent?
