I vaguely recall hearing of an HC clone called Plus, but I'm not even sure if it ran on 'Doze or MacOS. I think the author(s) may have been German. SuperCard from whoever's-publishing-SuperCard-this-year, a totally excellent superset of HyperCard (i.e. it's HyperCard done right and with a few groovy multimedia and OOP extras). I'm pretty sure that recent releases of SC include a free 'Doze runtime which you can distribute. Check it out. SuperCard can definitely convert HC stacks, though maybe still only those created with HC 1.x -- I haven't used it in a long time now. Not cheap, but good. Menus in particular are just done right -- why did Apple/Claris not do it this way in HC? (SC offered menus before HC did). Color is integrated in SC, not "supported" like an afterthought as in HC. HC itself has been retargeted as a QuickTime 3.x/4.x authoring environment, and QT has always been 100% cross-platform, so maybe investigate that avenue a bit further too. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 May 1999 19:59:23 -0700 From: Vic Norton (by way of Dan O'Donnell) Subject: (C) Norton and MacOS 8.1, 8.5, 8.5.1, 8.6 do not mix Hi Dan, Some comments on your infomac contribution: At 8:44 AM -0700 5/20/99, Dan O'Donnell wrote: >At the introduction of OS 8.1, the most current version of Norton Utilities >was 3.5.2. ANY info leads or appreciated. If you have a LaserWriter II NT, there's a DB25 port just for PCs, and you need to change two DIP switches according to an appendix in the manual. See http://www.info.apple.com/support/supportoptions/supportoptions.html, click on Apple Manuals Archive, click on Browse, select Printers, scroll down most of the way to the bottom of that first page, download the PDF manual for the II NT/NTX and read the appendix. In addition to finding a cable to connect to the DB25 port you'll need to flip some DIP switches to tell the printer to communicate using it rather than the 9 pin port it normally uses for AppleTalk. Below are technical notes explaining the switch settings for the LaserWriter NT and NTX respectively. Provided you want all previous data, select the last session available. If you want to make intermediate burns appear to go away, select a session other than the last one if you have more than one from which to choose. Well, maybe -- but it left all my 8100/80AV's capabilities intact (the clever PDS pass-thru connector), and gave it one enormous boost in speed. So all that 72-pin RAM I shelled out on is still productively at work, all those SCSI drives, and I've got the equivalent of a 1998 machine using my 1994 motherboard at a third of the price a new, equivalent 1998 machine would have cost. Some unpleasant, but then again, when half the crowd that runs Norton on MacOS 8.1 and above doesn't experience any problems, and half the crowd does we know something is at work here. Perhaps there is a stage where a system becomes so unstable that running Norton will only make it worse. But with at least 12 recent responders saying that Norton has done damage to their hard disk, I am still willing to stand by my claim. Everyone seems to agree that HFS+ can only be arrived at by reformatting the hard disk. Yet we also know that 8.1 and above are the only operating systems that will recognize HFS+ formatted hard disks regardless of if the startup disk is formatted as HFS+ itself. It makes me wonder if the HFS+ recognition is something that Norton has difficulty with on some unstable systems or not. I wonder if running a software that integrates the file system in itself and then crashes creates the instability. Vicom FTP gave me a normal Type 1 crash on my 7200, and it was then that I tried to run Norton to discover what was wrong after Vicom FTP wouldn't run with any stability following desktop rebuilds and zapping of PRAM. Well needless to say my Type 41 error occured after exiting from Norton Disk Doctor. It was then after rebooting I had my disk with a flashing question mark. To compound to the problem or not, the 7200 is not one of the machines that requires RAM be put in, in pairs. So I had built up my RAM to 112MB with the use of three 16MB modules and one 64MB module. Now the question remains does it make any difference to the 7200 if the RAM is installed in pairs? Does it make any difference to Norton Disk Doctor or other programs? Would Type 1 errors be reduced by installing RAM in pairs? In another interesting sidenote, I get Type 41 errors now when running TechTools Pro 2.1.1 from my Powerbook G3's hard disk. I did it once, but never got the flashing ? disk. Techtools Pro 2.0.1 which is what I have on CD-ROM, would run fine if the CD-ROM was what booted the machine. The Powerbook's RAM isn't installed in pairs either, and neither do the specs say it requires it. So the question remains would we be all better if we could install RAM in pairs? I don't have the money to solve the problem myself, but it would be an interesting experiment, especially on systems that have exhibited problems with Norton before. I am still trying to figure out why there is such a divergence in stability with 8.1 and Norton, and why some people still crash with Norton Disk Doctor 4.0.3 on even 8.5.1, whereas others have never had any problems. Do these crashes still happen with MacOS 8.6 and Norton Disk Doctor 4.0.4 which was just released? Does it make any difference if you use Apple's driver on the hard disk or some other? I had used Apple's hard disk drivers on my 7200. Being that clones can't take Apple's newest hard disk drivers, do the crashes happen more often on clones? A lot of unanswered questions.... I have a PB G3 and am using 8.6. Recently while using IE the computer froze and would not restart-- the flashing ?? replaced the Happy Mac. Attempting to start from the system CD (8.5 or 8.1--I tried both) resulted in the CD loading but not finding the HD. Starting from the Norton 4.01 CD my HD appeared on the desktop. (And my heart resumed a normal rhythm!) Norton diagnosed major priblems with the B Tree and leaves of that tree and fixed them. So Norton saved the computer from being sent in for repairs. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 May 1999 01:14:52 -0400 From: Ken Laskey Subject: Norton and MacOS 8+ As another data point, I use Norton 4.0.3 with systems up through 8.5.1 and on HFS+ partitions without any obvious problems. Filesaver seems to work fine, but I have seen bad things with previous versions of CrashGuard and I stay away from that. (Also note that Norton Fastback has disappeared from the mix.) This does not mean that I use it without any trepidation, but since Symantec bought out and trashed the real competition, I haven't been left with much choice. Also, there were problems with the previous 4.x versions and I wouldn't recommend using any 4.x other than 4.0.3. Actually when I bought the system (used) it came with system 8.1 and the two were not compatible; Norton was getting bogged down with files with missing threads and threads with missing files, or some such thing. However a patch from Norton and the 8.51 did the trick. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 31 May 1999 06:27:17 -0700 From: "David" Subject: Norton/Symantec and MacOS There have been a lot of adverse comments from various posters regarding NAV and NUM recently. My personal experience with both programs is that if you use the up to date versions there should be no problems. Virex is fine but I prefer to use NortonAV. The original poster who said there were so many problems seems to have been using out of date software and I suggest he gets his facts right before sounding off so liberally. he also suggested that Alsoft's DiskWarrior is a viable Alternative to Norton UM. This is NOT the case, as they have different functions altogether. I have a zip disk with a minimal system (8.6) loaded onto it, with the following tools which see to all my troubleshooting needs. Disk First Aid DiskWarrior Norton AV (with latest definitions) Norton UM TechTool Pro All are the latest versions and this is an important issue. I subscribe to the Version Tracker digest so I can keep up with the latest releases especially since the OS is also updated regularly. All have come to my rescue in the last 3 months, and all do different things. My highest recommendation goes to DiskWarrior which as able to rebuild my Hard disk directory when nothing else would recognize the drive. So there's my 2 cents worth. So I'd reach over and switch the modem off and back on, and if that= didn't work, I'd use a little piece of software called SerialSetter to= force the port closed. With the PowerBook, the modem is where I can't get= to it, and it isn't on the serial port; it has recurrently gotten moody= about dialing, requiring a full restart to regain the use of the internal= modem. Anyone know of any shareware or freeware that clears / resets the= PowerBook internal modem when it does this? b) Back in the System 7 days, I used a little extension called GetMoreInfo= to let me view / change the File Type and File Creator of files, either= individually or in batches. When MacOS 8.1 became my day-in day-out OS, I= addressed this same need by acquiring Snitch, which has the same= capabilities plus a few other options. But beginning with 8.5, Snitch= doesn't work! I need a replacement for this feature before I'll rely= continually on 8.6. I suppose I would use an AppleScript droplet, although= I hate cluttering up my desktop with icons and resist every new presence= there, especially when a menu item ought to do the job instead. I do have= QuicKeys, so I could use a non-droplet AppleScript and assign a keystroke= to invoke it in the Finder. Desired features and characteristics would be= that it displays current File Type and File Creator for selected file (if= one file is selected) and provides boxes for me to type in desired= replacement FT / FC and click OK to dismiss or change. If anyone knows of= an existing 8.6-savvy solution or has a notion of how to script one, please= let me know. If so, you thought you were charging but you actually ran down your battery. Now the battery is too low to wake up and you aren't getting AC either. This sounds a bit silly, but I just spoke to someone this week who had the exact same problem on a PC laptop.
