I like to keep the list down to a few realistic choices. I moved to more oddball applications to another drive to keep them out of the list. But Quicktime is contributing major clutter to my Mac Easy Open dialog box. Like an annoying five year old, Quicktime will follow up every application choice with "yadda yadda with Quicktime translation". I have tried it and find no decernable difference between a perfectly happy application and one being helped out by Quicktime. Please help be give Quicktime some quiet time. Thanks to the *many* people who wrote to help me with my monitor problem. I contacted Apple and learned that the repair program expired on September 13, 1999. I spoke with a customer service rep and his supervisor, and neither could be convinced to help me out. It was certainly frustrating to have missed the deadline by such a short time. Therefore, it looks like I will have to attempt the repair myself. Several folks have sent some advice on repairing cold or cracked solder joints. I am aware of the high voltages inside the CRT, and I know how to discharge the voltage. (I learned this when I had fix my old Apple 13 in RGB--another recall I missed, because my serial number wasn't in the range. I haven't had much luck with these Apple recalls.) When I get the time to repair the monitor, I'll post my experiences here for the benefit of others. If anyone else is going to try the repair in the meantime, be advised that there are a couple of useful items in the Usenet archives. Try searching at deja.com. This is a great list. Allan, Check this series of articles in MacFixit: http://www.macfixit.com/archives/september.99.c.shtml#scan15-09-23 The articles refer to an unpublicized warranty which I was able to use to get my Apple 15 Multiscan AV monitor repaired for free. It took me sometime to reach the right person at Apple (don't have that info here at work). I described my situation, which I assume is the same as your's..... at first intermittent miscolor as the red turns off and finally a permanent very blue-green screen. They sent me a box with a UPS shipping label. I put the monitor in the box, called UPS for pick up. Poof! One week later the monitor was back repaired. No cost! Now you will see from the MacFixit articles that it didn't work for some folks. Apple has all kinds of qualifications on their responsibility and your right to this warranty. But the bottom line is if you reach the right person and your problem is the one they have designated they will likely do the repair. Perhaps because it has been publicized on the 'net they were overwhemled and decided to be more selective. Just be nice and persistent. And Apple, if your listenin', Thanks! Dear List Readers: I still read both this digest and Tidbits in EasyView. I like that Setext format the best. I get the impression that the author of EasyView hasn't been heard of in ages. LONGO" Subject: How to open Apple 15" Multiple scan monitor I'm one of the unfortunates with an Apple Multiple Scan monitor that has the weird color syndrome. There seems to be thousands of us, and Apple declines to extend the warranty. The symptom is you get weird colors when the monitor is first turned on. Most commonly the screen is a pale yellow-green with no readable text or detail. In my case so far it usually goes away after it has been on for 15 min or so. I suspect it is getting worse and will soon be totally unusable. Rumor has it that the problem is a bad solder joint. I thought to look for it myself but I can't figure out how to open the bloody case. There are 2 Phillips screws on the back rear. I've removed them and the case seems to be separating a bit at the bottom. There seems to be a hinge on top that takes some special tool or knowledge to separate. Does anyone know how to do this or where I can find the info? Any info on fixing the problem would of course be much appreciated. Brad ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 07 Oct 1999 16:58:11 +0200 From: aeden@worldnet.fr Subject: VIRUS ALERT Messieurs les Archivists et tout le monde, VIRUS ALERT There seems little doubt that I am infected by some kind of 'PEST', be it a virus, worm, HORSEMAN OF THE APOCALYPSE, or whatever. Disenfectant 3,7,1 Antigax, Wormguard, and Macfee detect nothing out of order. I use daily a commercial develoment programme which checks itself on loading to see if it has been illegally modified (during the last 10 years it has provided 4 such alerts). Up to date it has never failed to provide an alert when it has been modified, but in this case no alert. This programme updates itself when used. The Pest manifests itself on my configuration (PC 6500 @250Mz, 32Mb RAM, 4,2 G Hard using 8,6 french) in the following ways. 1 On startup a) from the time kaleidescope loads to the time the menu bar clock appears is around 20 secs. When the pest is active (which is not always the case) this time is much greater and is now in the order of six minutes, having gradualy increased. During this period the hard disk is active intermittantly - it seems the pest is scanning for applications!!! b) The menu clock is not displayed on startup but instead we appear to jump straight to the application switcher. This is the first real indication that something is amiss c) Generally the Apple Menu is cut to one item (in my case the speakable items which is the only one using a popup drawer (if thats what you call it) - I suspect it would otherwise be empty) 2 In use My developpment programme is often used to manipulate info from one form to another, thus I have much switching between applications to check results, often having BBedit lite, Simpletext, Navigator, Finder Note, and Ascii chart open as well. The first symptom was the cursor freezing on changing windows to another application. This has happened to me at least twice a day since system 7, so I dont find that unusual. (my configuration is generally stable enough as it can run for 24 hours without blinking). However this started to occur at more and more frequent intervals. So much so that I gave up using BBedit, which seemed particularly sensitive to it. When freezing occured around five mouse clicks after launch and immediately after a reboot, the obvious conclusion is that there was a problem. This I have been investigating for the last several days. On evidence the Pest is linked someway with the number of mouse clicks and it activates a system freeze after X clicks. X reduces regularly to the point where the application freezes as soon as you click after launch or on the first selection of another application. At irregular intervals but very roughly two hourly, there is a 'halt' of around a minute where nothing responds but there is disk activity. This can even be in an opening dialogue. It seems that this is the doing of the Pest. From what I read it is classic of some kind of worm activity. There was a period when it affected character operation - like one typed quotes (ascii=34) and one got the other kind. this caused my developpement programme to give me sysntax errors which could'nt exist (after ten years of use I know a syntax error when I see one!). It also only responded to every odd character input unless one clicked the mouse. This is evidence that the system font has become infected. Having a lot of applications on my hard disk, like five thousand odd (as well as a lot more on CD's-being the Editor of MacSoftIndex, that should not be too surprising) and it would take a lot of time to scan them all. I would suspect that the 'evidence' would have been a lot less evident if there had only been 100 as the six minutes delay on start up would perhaps only have been a barely noticeable 10 seconds. Now of course I know that I should have anti-virus active all the time, especially handling lots of software from different sources, but for reasons which have no place here that is often not possible. This morning I actually found some dates of contamination, Friday the 2 July, Friday the 30th July, Friday the 20th of August, 99. It would be easy to jump to the conclusion that the Pest itself activated only on a Friday, whereas the results of its contamination appear during application use. So how do I know what has been contaminated if I have no means of identifying the virus? Because the date of last modification of the folder is less than all the files it contains - concrete example Finder note 2,0 has folder date of sunday 8 august 9:24 ;- it contains Clipping Color O matic.tp -friday 20 august 11:43- the presence of this clipping, which has nothing to do with FInder note, I assume was an error by me, but that is an assumption because, having just re-installed the entire system, at the moment I'm not going to open it to find out what it contains - talk about Pandora's box!!) Finder note itself -friday 20 august 11:43 Finder note extension copy.sit - Stuffit compressed copy friday 20 august 11:43 Finder Note read me (in form of clipping) -friday 20 august 11:43 Realease notes. sit and troubleshooting.sit -friday 20 august 11:43 Now I actually added Finder Note to the Index on the 30th january 99 and at that point I compressed the parts I wouldn't be likely to use. Clearly something passed through that folder and did something to everything it contained. Up to date I have ascertained that it not only affects applications of all kinds, but stuffit and disk doubler archives, aliases, clippings, custom icons, and also fonts. Sounds and generic icons dont appear to be touched. Miscallaneeous comment:- there seems to be some evidence that even when booting from a CD (thank God for CDs) and having used an infected programme that the Pest remains active in memory and contaminates other launched programmes so causing crashes, even though it cannot contaminate what is on the CD. So it may be that my Pest is already known and somebody will be kind enough to tell me what it is and what I need (to do) for both decontamination and future prevention. On the other hand, maybe its new and other people are going to have similar problems, in which case forwarned is forarmed. So for both reasons I ask that you include this in your postings. Today I'm going to write a programme which will give me a list of all files whose mod dates are more recent than the folder mod date and should thus have confirmation or not of the Friday syndrome. Tommorow, being Friday, may permit some further testing, hehehe (thinks - now I must download a new Init Tracker because I need it to identify what contains the Pest!). Be on guard Anthony Eden PS - I profit from the opportunity to bring up a non-connected point. I am one of those who only receive your excellent digest spasmodically. In reply to others who wrote on the same subject, I see you suggest it is their mail service which is at fault. In that case would you please explain how my mail server provides, without fault for more than a year, the daily update from Version Tracker, but chooses not to forward your Digest at least half the time (like I always get two in succession and then nothing for a week!)? I suggest that perhaps your mail server is choosing not to forward all of so many mailings on your list (I assume thousands) but chooses a part only on a time and person selective basis (presumably so reducing costs) - would it seem reasonable to you that so many other servers appear to be at fault and yours is the only one not? ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Oct 1999 21:54:23 -0400 From: Randall Meadows Subject: VPN software for Mac At 10:52 PM +0900 10/6/99, Kumeda's wrote: >I am looking for VPN (Virtual Private Network) client software for Mac, such >as Alta-Vista tunnel for Windows.
