There seems to be a prevailing assumption that given enough time someone will reply to a question answered here. And so people don't reply because they worry about spamming the user with repetitive replies. What ends up happening is the groupthink of the existence of other replies means nobody replies! Actually accurate replies, no matter how many of them are quite valuable. Just so long as they aren't flames, I know I certainly will accept them. I got one reply from a user to my question which started out: >No doubt you've already been told this by now, but ... Well I hadn't. Even if you think you know the answer and just want to clarify what my question means to give me an appropriate reply, that's fine. There was a time this place was so helpful, I got thirty replies to a single question! That appears to be past us now. Thank you. I appear to have a 'Rev B' machine which is capable of supporting more than one IDE HD.There is no Zipdrive in the machine. SUMMARY: 1.0 Rev B beige DT G3 have connectors allowing one extra IDE HD to be installed in the bay above the Zip bay IF there is no Zip installed. 2.0 The CDROM is an ATAPI device jumpered as 'Master' residing on the same bus as the extra HD. 3.0 A second IDE HD jumpered as 'Slave' will function in the machine with no apparent problems even as a boot disk. INFORMATION: My G3 has a display card in PCI slot $F1 designated as an ATY,mach64_3DUPro. (Apparently this indicates a 'Rev B' machine but this designation doesn't appear on the ATI list of chips.) The '**Pro' designates a Rev B machine. The machine has an IDE cable connected to the CDROM (jumpered as 'Master' -> ID=0) and connected to a spare 40 pin IDE socket. Two Spare power sockets (4-pin) are also available in similar daisy-chain fashion. The Zip bay and the bay above have rails ready to accept 'sleds' (a sled is screwed to an HD and presumably to an IDE Zip for mounting purposes, it slides into rails and locks in place) ACTION: I purchased a 13.7GB Western Digital Expert AT66 EIDE drive and obtained an old sled from a local Apple dealer. The 'Expert' I jumpered for 'Slave' according to its label, screwed on the sled with the plastic pull-up flap towards the connectors end, connected the IDE connector and power cable connector and booted from the existing 4GB WD Caviar. OS 8.6 is installed, 96MB RAM. The 'Expert' didn't mount. Using Drive Set Up 1.7.3 the 'Expert' showed up as 'Untitled'. Low level format selection was dimmed so I selected 'Initialize' which took only 5 secs or so and 'Untitled' HD popped up on the desktop on bus AT1, ID=1 (i.e. a 'Slave'.) It had 'lost' some 0.9GB capacity since it purported to be a 13.6GB 'formatted' and desktopped as a '12.7GB'. I copied the contents from the Caviar and froze some 1.6GB into the copy so I booted from my Utilities CD and re-copied, no problem. After sorting out some 'lost' aliases and stuffing the contents of the Caviar I ran various utilities, defragmented and selected the 'Expert' as the boot disc in Control Panel 'Startup Disk'. It booted (seeming much faster than the Caviar and MUCH less noisy!) Thanks to all who offered advice -- I apologise for not listing them but somehow I lost some mailboxes in my reconfiguration. tony ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 21 Nov 1999 17:22:03 +0100 From: Ked Shayer Subject: ISDN Router Hi.
