I have my Imac DV SE connected to a Powermac 7200 and HP Deskjet 870Cse via ethernet using appletalk. The printer is connected via an ethernet-to-localtalk adapter. Everything works fine until I connect to the internet, then I can't print from the Imac. I connect to the net via the buit-in modem through my employer, Rice University, and when I log on, all the appletalk zones at Rice show up in the chooser and my local printer driver becomes unavailable. In the appletalk control panel there are options to chose "ethernet built-in" or "remote only". Switching the two does not change the situation. It would seem that the the "ethernet built-in" option does not work correctly. It should also be mentioned that the problem exist with both OS 8.6 and OS 9 despite an apple rep's assurance that it wouldn't happen in the latter. Has anyone had the same experience? Is there a fix or a work-around? Hi, I have a specific technical question about the purchase of a new modem. We recently moved into a section of our state with apparently rather anti= quated phone lines. There are intermittent problems connecting to my ISP. One of= the symptoms that seem to indicate there is =93trouble on the line=94 is diff= ering connection rates. E.g., if I use PPP to connect I get messages like =93Co= nnecting at 12000=94, =93Connecting at 9600=94, etc. Keep in mind that this is a m= odem configured for 14.4K. After LOTS of troubleshooting (checking and recheck= ing software settings, comparing complaints from other folks in my area, etc.= ), the current theory is that the phone lines are so old that my poor old 1994 L= ineLink 14.4 modem can=92t deal with the degraded signal quality. I=92m running a PowerMac 266 MHz G3 (beige) running System 8.1. Would upg= rading to a new 56k modem POSSIBLY solve this problem? If so, what model(s) might y= ou suggest? I=92m hoping that error correction technology has improved since= I bought my first modem in =9194. The technical specs on my old LineLink state tha= t the Error Correction is =93MNP-5=94. The specs on some of the newer modems st= ate that they feature =93MNP-5/MNP-10=94 Error Correction, so I hope that translat= es to an improvement. Also, my ISP is V.90 capable. Oshel" Subject: [*] RandomPassword It's hard to think up a password. Here's a random password generator based on the old diceware idea, but I use a PRNG to pick out candidates from the vocabulary list. Using dice to select one of 7776 words is perfectly random, but awfully tedious. This method gives you an instant password that looks exactly like you used diceware, with essentially the same level of "random"-ness. The program asks you to select a file using Standard Get File. Choose a file at least 64 megabytes in length, with randomized content. For example, a large encrypted Stuffit archive, or a large PGP Disk volume. Internally, both of these kinds of files look random -- in fact, they can't be compressed, usually a great indicator that their bit patterns are unavailable for analysis. The file is used to initialize a small additive congruential generator (see Knuth), which is used to select five words from Beale's vocabulary, the alternative list distributed at www.diceware.com. The program shows you the password in an Alert (speaking it aloud if you've allowed OS 8.5 to speak), and also puts it in the clipboard for you to paste into another application. Notice the kicker? The file you select as an entropy source can be on a CD-ROM, offline. And the "entropy" of its bit pattern depends on the random contents of whatever you've been shoving into the underlying archive for the past year or so. A fine kettle of fish! Source is included, support is not. Enjoy. Where do you keep your confidential data? Like most people these days, you've probably got a growing number of user IDs, passwords, registration keys, PINs, serial numbers, and the like, stored in various places on your Mac or scribbled on miscellaneous pieces of paper around your home or office. When you stop and think about it, you probably have more of these pesky bits of information scattered about than you realize. Now there is a software program to manage passwords and the like: it is called Web Confidential. It uses an intuitive, easy-to-use cardfile metaphor which will enable even novice users to get up to speed in no time. Power users will find a large number of options to enable them to configure Web Confidential to meet their specific needs. Web Confidential offers 448-bit encryption. Web Confidential 1.3 is Mac OS 8.5-savvy and is available in English, German, French, Swedish and Japanese. Web Confidential is $20 shareware. You already know the v5's of all the Aladdin utils do better at decoding MIME types from email and Usenet better than previous versions and a good sight better than other utils. On this score, when I've got something to send BinHex or UUE to someone, I sometimes do a "dry-run" encode of the item in Deluxe to get a ballpark idea of how big the transmitted file will be. It's good to have it around: my other encoder utils are stashed away to the four winds on Zips. Aladdin's promo literature touts the "tighter" compression of the SIT5 format. I always found it more convenient to be able to pull a single item out of an archive rather than having to unstuff the whole arch and trash what I don't need. Like ZipIt, Deluxe (or even Lite) lets you do this: the drag&drop utils don't. I really should take a moment here to applaud Aladdin for making the SIT5 archive format single-fork, instead of big-data/tiny-resource fork like previous .sit versions were (by and large). I think that may have been the result of the (dubious) popularity on the Wintel side of ports of Expander and DropStuff to Windows, but anyways hooray for convergence -- at least here. It' really depends on how much more you want from an Aladdin app whether you get Deluxe or not. This email just points out some of the benefits of having it. Hope this helps. It does lots of things I like, but the one thing where MenuFonts has it beat is in how it handles font names and font groupings. MenuFonts allows you to change how the font names will display and even to create your own families. WYSIWYG Menus, on the other hand, uses information provided by the font publisher to determine what the font and family names are, sometimes with very interesting results, and definitely without the flexibility I'm looking for. So my question is, is there a way I can ResEdit the font name and family name information in the individual fonts so that they show up the way I want them to in WYSIWYG menus without screwing up the font mappings when I move a file that uses those fonts to a machine where the font names have been left alone (I'm assuming that as long as I leave the font numbers alone, I'll be fine).
