The recompressed animations are pixel-for-pixel equivalent to the original animations if fewer than 256 colours are used in the animation. Different GIF utilities use different techniques to store their animations; A Smaller GIF tries several compression techniques, and uses the technique that will minimize the size of the resulting GIF. It is often capable of reducing an animated GIF as most GIF programs do not maximally compress their output. A Smaller GIF also serves as a full function animated GIF viewer. A Smaller GIF lets you: *view animated GIFs at normal speed, in either the normal or reverse directions, *examine individual frames by advancing or rewinding frame by frame, *fast-forward and rewind quickly through animations, and *randomly access individual frames by entering frame numbers or positioning a slider. While viewing, the current frame is shown along with its frame number, starting time and duration. A Smaller GIF also provides some very basic editing of animated GIFs: frame timing and interlacing may be adjusted. GIF comments (comments in the animation that are not visible during viewing, but are visible using GIF utilities) may be added, edited, or removed. I knew this fact long ago, but didn't remember without some helpful nudges from Tom and Scott (thanks!): Scriptable Finder didn't show up until System 7.5! So I couldn't write an AppleScript to control the Finder (of System 7.1) on my PowerBook 170 until I upgraded to System 7.5+. I recall there was a way to script that Finder with an extra piece of software, but it was easier to switch to 7.5. I was using 7.1 because it uses less RAM so I could run applications on the 170. Now that the 170 is a print server, System 7.5 can use as much of those 8 Meg as it wants.
