Dear Digest readers, For years all we had was Darkside and After Dark. Both were getting increasingly unstable as Apple upgraded their operating system. Sure we have SETI @home, and some OpenGL screen savers that were just released if your graphics card didn't crash on them first. Now at long last the website we've all been waiting for has opened! http://www.macscreensavers.com/ Stand alone screensaver programs, and all the screen savers you could want. You can even build your own. And they are free! PC users could easily have pointed fingers at us wondering why Mac users don't have built in screen savers like they do. Especially NT users. Especially people who browsed to http://www.screensavers.com. Well no longer...we have a site for our own platform (albeit quite a few of their screen savers are crossplatform developed, at least they have a lot of Mac screen savers I never knew existed...like "Man in the Moon." The secret is out...don't let another Mac user feel ashamed they don't have free screen savers they can't have, because it just ain't true! It is part font browser, part font organizer, part text and style editor. You get to arrange your fonts in flexible groupings that can be modified on the fly. No more font menu mayhem. One of the best things about it is that your system fonts are left completely untouched (no annoying and time consuming restarts). The Fontz offers a simple and inexpensive solution to your font management and text formatting needs. This version of The Fontz is PPC only. The microphone input is all you get. Are you sure it's an extra-long plug? I think you'll find it's the same as the plug that fits into headphones. One way to find out: take a pair of Walkman headphones, plug them into the sound in plug, go to the sound panel, choose "sound in" for the sound input, and agree to the option "play sound through output device" such as your speaker. You can also record using Simplesound to check if it's recording. (Simplesound eats up disk space quite fast - so make it brief but loud.) >Where do they sell these adaptors? Stereo. >Should I connect to my stereo system's headphone socket (large size >plug) this will have to do but it's not ideal - you need to take it out to a small walkman-type headphone plug, which will involve soldering. Better would be to take the output from your preamp. > or should I connect to the speaker output (clips for wires, not >sockets)? Only if you want to turn your G4 into a sort of early firework with a burnt-out sound card. >Will importing sound in this manner yield reasonable quality? If your hi-fi is any good, you might as well just buy a longer headphone lead. That's what I don't understand about your plan - it seems a bit backasswards. If you wanted to output from the G4 to your hifi that would make more sense. The plaintalk microphones are powered via the long pin of that non standard plug, which was used particularly to stop people from accidentally frying their other audio equipment with it. Just use a standard (stereo) 1/16 inch plug. I used this method (from my stereos headphone socket - the fewer components to get in the path the better) to excise some of the more explicit lyrics from the music my sister in laws dance students wanted to use for their graduation performance. Everyone from school principal to ratbag pubescent rebel were satisfied with the result. I can't print to the LaserWriter - in the Chooser I correctly establish the printer, but when i try to print (MS Word 98, ClarisWorks 5, etc.) I can't - the green diode starts blinking and that's it. Please advice what I will need to do. The printer works fine for my needs and I don't have funds/need to buy a new postscript printer right now.
