I needed this for myself (to control some Macs where I may not always have a mouse available), so I put it together very quickly and decided others may find it useful. I hope somebody can make use of it! For detailed instructions visit the following web page: http://wrench.et.ic.ac.uk/adrian/software/ The archive also includes a text file with the instructions, but here's a trimmed down version to get you started... Installation ~~~~~~~~~~~ Drag the MouseKeys extensions into your Extensions folder and restart. Using MouseKeys ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ MouseKeys can be activated by pressing the control+option+command keys. You should see a small black 'thing' appear in the top-left corner of your main screen. You can now move the cursor using the arrow keys. Pressing the space bar will act as if the mouse button has been pressed down. Press the space bar again to 'let go' of the mouse button. MouseKeys will automatically deactivate after five seconds if no key has been pressed, or as soon as any key is pressed (apart from the arrow keys, the space bar and the modifier keys: control, option, command, shift). It can also be deactivated immediately by pressing the three modifier keys (control+option+command) down together again. Any problems, please check the web page above. I recently applied Apple's firmware update and discovered that the 3rd party DIMM is now listed as "incompatible" by the Apple System Profiler. A call to Apple and to the RAM supplier confirmed that the firmware update sometimes causes this problem. I have two options: run a software fix that will alter the EPROM in my 3rd party DIMM, or return the DIMM for replacement. I don't have the name of the software fix, but I'm told it's available at VersionTracker. I plan to run the software fix first to see if that clears things up. I hope it will clear the Type 2 and Type 3 errors I've been experiencing, too. You may find it if you're lucky on a shelf of a computer store. The better way however is to look around for "used" copies whose owners have changed to something more expensive such as GoLive. Or you might consider Adobe PageMill (which I don't know whether it can still be bought new). I don't like it that much, I prefer CHP. When Intuit stopped upgrading the Mac version of Quickbooks(QB), I installed Virtual PC(VPC) and migrated to the Windows version of QB. I recently upgraded to VPC version 4 because I wanted to take advantage of dynamically expanding drive images and the claimed speed improvements. Since then I have encountered a major problem: Printing from QB to my Laserwriter IIg via Appletalk over Ethernet frequently results in a Postscript error that causes Postscript code to be printed. Among other things, it means we can t print paychecks very easily. Connectix s response is that this is a known problem and printing more than 5 pages via Print Spooling is unlikely to work. Kind of a major undocumented shortcoming, don t you think? One tech support person told me that this problem was exacerbated by small memory allocations. At his suggestion, I increased the preferred memory for VPC and the Print Monitor, but this has had no effect. I was also told that the only way to avoid using Print Spooling was to have a dedicated printer connected, for example via USB. This situation seems preposterous. I am surprised and disappointed in Connectix. This problem did not exist on my configuration before I installed VPC Version 4. This is clearly a bug, but Connectix doesn t seem to want to deal with it. Has anyone else had to deal with this situation? Have you found a way out, or do I have to drop back to VPC Version 2 (which is going to be a major pain in the butt)? Here is the info again: TimeRunner version 0.5 ====================== Brief Description ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TimeRunner is a very small INIT extension which gives you the ability to tell your Mac to automatically launch applications at predetermined times. You will need at least System 7.1 to use TimeRunner. It should work with all system versions up to Mac OS 9.x. I literally threw this together in a couple of hours to get a job done that I needed - it's not pretty, nor incredibly user-friendly, but it's simple, and I thought somebody else might find it useful... Installation ~~~~~~~~~~~~ Drag the TimeRunner extension onto the icon of your System Folder. You will be asked if you want to place it into the Extensions folder, which is where this extension should go! (Alternatively, you can of course drag it into the Extensions folder yourself.) Once it is in place you should restart your Mac to allow the extensions to load as the system starts up. Once Finder has started you should see a warning message appearing which tells you that there is no "TimeRun Items" folder in your System Folder. If you open up your System Folder and create a new folder with the name "TimeRun Items", then you can place applications to launch (or better, aliases to applications) into this folder. How to Specify the Launch-time for an Item in the TimeRun Items folder ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ TimeRunner works out when an item should be launched by examining the name of that item and looking for a string with the format "at HHMM". "HH" corresponds to the hour, while "MM" corresponds to the minutes. For example, to launch an item at half past three in the afternoon every day, make sure that the string "at 1530" is part of that item's name. It is possible to use the "*" character to match any digit of the four- digit timecode. For example, "at **30" will launch the item every hour at half past the hour, while "at 20*0" will launch the item every ten minutes from 8pm until its last launch at 8:50pm. If you want an item to launch at different times not covered by the above, then use several aliases to the same application. For example, to launch an application at midday and at midnight, use two aliases to that application, one which includes "at 1200" in its name and one which includes "at 0000" in its name.
