It's great for running stand-alone MacroMedia Director movies as screen savers, executing AppleScript applets during idle time, restarting demos after a person walks away from an in-store Mac, etc. It will also keep applications like FileMaker Pro Server in the foreground so they run faster when the server is unattended. AutoLaunch is capable of locating an application anywhere on a Mac's hard disk, making distribution of Director presentations much easier - you don't have to worry about installation procedures or that users will move the presentation to another folder - it'll always work. A new capability in this release will make web browsers periodically cycle through a list of URLs, letting you display your favorite web pages during idle time! It currently requires some ResEdit manipulation to set the URLs, but future versions will provide a user interface if interest merits it. In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are available at: If you re-upload BulkRate to other BBSs or services, please include all the files that came with it, especially the documentation. Send bug reports or suggestions to greg_neagle@kagi.com or to the OneNet BulkRate conference. Note that my e-mail address has changed. BulkRate 2.5 adds support for TCP/IP connections to FirstClass servers, and in addition can make use of any available serial port for "normal" modem connections - even PC Card modems. Version 2.5.2 notes * Fixed some more date/time display problems that occured with certian non-US date formats. * Fixed a bug in the file transfer routines. * Added a delay between BBSs when calling mulitple BBSs with a script - this is the same as the redial delay. * Fixed a recurring bug that occured when BulkRate was waiting for certain responses from the server; one occasional symptom of this bug was a "Could not confirm message was sent" error. * Increased the time BulkRate will wait while trying to establish a TCP connection. This release fixes display problems on small-format Mac screens (Plus, SE, SE/30, and Classic models). Like many people, you've probably found that increasing the size of the disk cache in the Memory control panel can improve the performance of many applications, especially web browsers like Netscape Navigator. The disk cache speeds up disk input and output by keeping the contents of files in RAM, rather than immediately reading or writing them on the disk. The problem with using a large disk cache is that when you save information, the data may end up staying in the cache for quite a while before it really gets written to your hard disk. If your Mac crashes before the cache gets saved, your data is lost. CacheSaver addresses this problem by periodically saving (or "flushing") the disk cache, thus minimizing data loss should your Macintosh crash while you are working. You can set CacheSaver to flush the cache whenever your Mac is idle for more than a specific amount of time, or it can do it automatically at regular intervals. CacheSaver also provides a hotkey so you can flush the disk cache manually. In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are available at: This program may be included on the Info-Mac and Umich CD-ROMs. [Archived as /info-mac/cfg/cache-saver-102.hqx; 182K] ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Feb 1997 02:27:42 -0700 From: firewalker@hol.fr Subject: [*] cdmd.sit.hqx, compression/utils Compact DocMaker documents compacts DocMaker documents better than Compact Pro or StuffIt. Pokras Hyper-Stack Player Pro ("HSP Pro") is a player for HyperCard stacks which provides the functionality of all versions of Apple's HyperCard Player up to and including the lastest version, 2.3.5. So if your Mac did not come with HyperCard Player 2.2 or 2.3, you can use HSP Pro instead. Available separately for 680x0 Macs (68k version) and for Power Macs (PPC version). HSP Pro is an upgrade of my previously released Hyper-Stack Player 2.3. ***A special new feature is HSP Pro's built-in ability to view and edit scripts and the contents of locked and/or hidden fields.*** HSP Pro goes further than just allowing you to merely use HyperCard stacks: - create buttons which you can link to your favorite stacks (size, color and style are customizable. You can even add a monochrome icon of your choice); - use the "Print Stack..." and "Print Field..." menu commands of the "File" menu (these are ordinarily disabled in Apple's Player); - view and edit the contents of fields (even locked and hidden ones); - view and edit the scripts which make HyperCard stacks work; - add buttons to other stacks to give them added features; - other new features over previous versions are described in an "HSP Pro New Features" file which is included. Some features require a registration code for activation. HSP Pro provides a good way for school computer labs to provide access to their HyperCard stacks. A password protection scheme prevents the students from making any unauthorized changes. Shareware $10/Mac; Site licenses $50/site (e.g., school computer labs or a single corporate location). Free upgrade for registrants of previous versions (or anyone who registers a previous version by February 28, 1997. See the included "HSP Upgrading & Special Offer" file). HSP Pro can be registered world-wide by credit card using either E-mail (with automatically encrypted credit card info), fax or snail-mail through the Kagi Shareware service. First, among many other potential uses, Internet Logger will provide a convenient means to fully document your internet connections, including: Tracking session times and cumulative use time by day and month. Ability to enter complex session rate structures and automatically estimate session and cumulative costs by day or month. Ability to count down time remaining on either prepaid hours or hours charged at a flate rate. Optional Log file documenting session and cumulative times and estimated costs. Optionally compute session times by rounding up to the nearest minute. Some online services seem to compute times this way. You can check it yourself. Allows automatic connection via PPP, SLIP, or operation as a manual timer. Allows multiple timers with individual settings. You can keep track of use of multiple providers conveniently. Each can have it's own log file. Compatibility with Open Transport when used with OT/PPP. FreePPP v 2.5 or earlier are also supported. New features in version 2.1: OT/PPP support - to connect with OT/PPP just select OT/PPP in the Preferences. Resizable Timer Window - if the timer window is too small, Shift-click on the window and drag to resize the window. Once resized you can enlarge the fonts. Timers created with version 1.x are not compatible with version 2.x. Do not try to open Timers created with version 1.x. The inflection of words is one of the most difficult parts of learning many foreign languages since there are numerous inflection patterns. "Verbs&Nouns" is an application that helps you to learn these patterns and refresh your knowledge about the rules for the inflection of verbs and nouns in a foreign language. The program has many other useful features to help you to learn or research a foreign language. The program lets you create a database of verbs or nouns in a foreign language. You can easily construct the inflection patterns (rules) for words that are regular. You can include other information about each word, such as a translation, grammar characteristics, comments, etc. in a convenient form. Comments are useful for storing examples of the use of the word, or for recording other information. The facility for merging databases makes it easy to share comments with other users. The program has an exercise window. It automatically generates exercises to allow you to practise inflection or translation. You can collect the words that you have already learned and let the program generate exercises just for this group of words. It works for Win 3.1 and Win95. It makes those machines speak AppleTalk, so that they can make use of Apple servers and can print to Apple printers. It has to be installed on each PC. Win 3.1 needs version 1.2f, while Win95 needs version 2.0. Win 3.1 has the limitation of speaking a maximum of (if I remember well 2) protocols. So if this machine runs TCP/IP, AppleTalk would be the second protocol. You don't have the possibility to speak another protocol than (as for example IPX). Win95 doesn't have that limitation. And if you buy one of the Apple Servers, this package (version 2.0) is FREE (on one of the networking CD's) ! For us here (we have also a mixed Mac/PC environment), this package works just fine. After many hours searching the Tech Info Library I found several docs relating to these problems. It seems that the 110v power adaptor has a little 'o' ring on the end that plugs into the machine. If that is lost (according to apple this happens frequently) it will fry the logic board. Also there is a very specific procedure to using the 110v adptor as far as how you plug it in and which part plugs in first. If you don't use the correct procedure the logic board is fried again. I'm not sure how the machine continues to operate with a fried logic board but it does??????? I looked for the print out of the TIL article but could not find it (it has the article number on it for easy reference). I suggest a look at the TIL and perhaps a call to apple. Good Luck, Wayne PS- I found that replacing the logic board costs more than the machine is worth. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 26 Feb 1997 17:14:48 +0100 From: Arild Eugen Johansen Subject: Quark end-of-file Does anyone have a solution to the message: QuarkXPress encountered an error: Auto-Save:Unexpected end-of-file encountered. You need to have Claris XTND translators installed to read a PICT file, but this is standard Claris procedure. It also does have a reasonable set of paint tools, although they're admittedly hard to find and not as rich as SuperPaint's. Despite a lot of negativity surrounding Deneba these days, I've had good luck with Canvas 5 and found it to be a more than adequate (if somewhat pricey) replacement for SuperPaint.
