The results were so good that we thought that others could use it as well. eMerge is ideally suited for small to medium size businesses looking to save money on postage and mailing costs. If you can send by email, why pay real money for stamps?? eMerge was specifically designed to make it easy to send: - Invoices - Bills - Reminders - Newsletters - Announcements eMerge has the following features: - Importing/Exporting of common database formats - Direct connection to recipients' mail server - Optional connection to mail server (useful for firewalls) - Built-in text editor - Contains built-in variables (date, time, message count, etc...) - Contains up to ten user-definable variables - Preview mode allows easy previewing of messages The demonstration version of eMerge is limited in that only ten recipients can be saved in any list and only ten messages can be sent each time the application is run. You don't need to worry about what format the file is in; all you specify is the desired output format. Finder Sound files (sfil), AIFF files, WAVE files, AU Mu-law and linear, QuickTime Audio (Movies) and Sound Designer II files can be freely converted. You can save your popular Settings under as a menu item or as a separate Settings file. The common web formats are flagged and ready to use as defaults, such as audio/basic mono 8kHz mu-law. After conversion files can be automatically sent to SoundMachine for playing. It needs at least QuickTime 2.1 and Apple's Sound Manager 3.1 or later. It is a fun game for anybody interested in math puzzles. The target age group is age 10 and up. Grad students of mathematics will enjoy this also. Students who have to learn the Roman numeral system are provided with a motivation to really wanting to know what LII, CXC, DLXXXIX etc. stand for. People who think they know the Roman numeral system will probably found out they are not so fluent as they thought they were. An all-time high score is kept, and represented, of course, in Roman numerals. The game works as follows: - you are given 6 numbers - you are given 1 target number Your task is to combine the 6 numbers, using addition, multiplication, subtraction and division, and get to the target number. You don't have to use all 6, but each number you can only use once. For example, try to make 431 with the numbers 8 10 25 2 75 6. Now imagine all numbers are represented in Roman numerals... The game has two complexity levels and generates thousands and thousands of problems. The puzzles can be solved at your own pace or you can race against the clock. You can also earn extra bonus points if you opt to compete against the machine and beat it. The modems I have compared are a US Robotics 28.8Kbps and TDK DF2814 28.8Kbps. I have tried them both with MacTCP and OT. Yesterday I installed a copy of Compuserve's Information Manager software for the Mac, v3.0, from a CD provided by Compuserve. I noticed that the Compuserve software uploaded its own Compuserve PPP software. When I switched back to my ISP and attempted to dial up, the Compuserve PPP software took over and attempted to connect me via Compuserve--at $3 an hour, I might add. Every time I wanted to connect via my ISP, Compuserve's PPP software was attempting to take over, so I trashed all of the 3.0 software and all of the other goodies it loaded. Now, every time I attempt to launch my Apple Internet Dialer software, I get the following message: An error has occurred. "A resource file is damaged." I've spent a day trying to fix things without success. I've done all of the following: --Reloaded the Apple Interned Dialer software --Reloaded the System Software --Run Disk First Aid --Run Norton Utilities --Run MacCheck I'm running a Power Computing PowerCenter 120 with System 7.5.5, Netscape Navigator Gold 3.0, and Claris Emailer. Can anyone suggest a possible solution. Without access to the Internet Dialer, I cannot change any of my ISP's settings, and I cannot log on to the Internet. I don't want to have to trash the entire hard disk and reformat everything. However, I've about exhausted all of the possible fixes I can think of. Help! Thanks in advance. Many nice people responded with a recommendation for "Toner Tuner" a program which allows for adjustment of the toner density when printing, however, no one who responded knew of a program to allow the on-screen preview. Browsing through the back of Mac World I came across a utility called "Laser Merge" which among many other things allows for on-screen previews _and_ toner density adjustment. There is a free, fully-functional demo available at www.mindgate.com. I think the main problem with this program is that nobody seems to know about it. If you're looking for better control of your printer, check out the demo, it's very nice. Either way, please pass this on. I am writing this to do my best to alert everyone to a "small" snag I've recently come across concerning Iomega, the company responsible for the creation of the ZIP, JAZ, and DITTO drives. As most of us have discovered, Iomega has become a fantastic simple solution to the problem of lack of sufficient hard drive space, or the difficulty of moving your data from one place to another. I myself have a Zip drive that has worked perfectly and has given me absolutely no problems. My department at school as well as the company I work for both have multiple drives all of which have worked fine in the past. Despite their somewhat silly "my stuff" campaign I have always been very appreciative for Iomega's company and product line... ...This is why I was extremely surprised when I encountered MAJOR problems when trying to contact Iomega directly to address some minor ones. The company I work for recently has come into some problems with our Jaz drive...trouble with it mounting, cartridges not reading, etc.... We also have a Zip drive for which have never received our $50.00 rebate. The problem occured when I attempted to contact Iomega to address these issues. Like every other company out there they have an automated phone line service which is an absolute pain. I've dealt with enough of them, however, that I can eventually either get the information I need out of them or actually talk to a human being. The trouble with Iomega is that the ONLY way to talk to a human being is if you are willing to pay a $15.00 tech support fee if you own a Zip or Ditto drive, and a $20.00 tech fee if you own a Jaz drive. They do claim they won't charge you if your Iomega product is truly defective, but if by chance you just overlooked a simple problem that they diagnose, or if you are no longer under warranty, you will be charged the full fee. I also attempted to reach them via e-mail, at which point I received an AUTOMATED response stating that I had included no key words in my letter and therefore the computer could not answer any of my questions automatically. The computer than instructed me to direct any of my personal calls to Iomega's tech support line for a small fee. I finally decided after numerous different attempts at getting through their system to just talk to a tech support person and see if they could answer my question without charging me for our drive (still under warranty). I reached someone after a brief wait and he took down all my information (i.e. place I work, my name, my phone number). When he asked for my address and credit card number I stopped him and asked what he intended to do with it. He explained that this was part of company policy. I turned to ask my boss if she felt it was okay to disclose the information and when I came back to the phone, he had hung up on me. I was not called back although he had already taken down my phone number. As a final attempt to contact SOMEONE from Iomega, I tried to find their address on their website and not surprisingly found nothing except for automated web tech support and a telephone number for their $15.00/$20.00 "deal." IN SHORT, there is absoultely no way to reach Iomega unless you either 1: pay their tech support fee, or 2: drive to their company head quarters (wherever that may be) and actually talk to the people that run the place (but hey, they're probably automated too). If you already own a Iomega product, cross your fingers and hope it doesn't break. If you don't own one...I suggest you take your business to a company that can actually backs up their product. It's too bad, their support isn't as good as their "stuff." ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Mar 1997 12:44:42 -0600 (CST) From: Derek Jacobs Subject: Iomega Jaz Well, it seems I have gotten ANOTHER bad Jaz disk. Originally, when I purchased my drive in December or thereabouts, I popped in the Tools disk, installed all the stuff, and then put in the second cartrige I had purchased with it. It said 'Please format this disk' so I loaded the tools and let it crank away. about three-quaarters of the way through (600-700 meg area) it would make some funny sounds and spit out the cart, saying operation failed. Well, I called Iomega and they hung up on me, and I still don't know why. I called the place of purchase (MacWarehouse) and they said they would exchange it for a new one, which they did and I appriciated. Well, two days ago this cart started acting up. I use this one the most, keeping the tools disk for a spare. I ended up loading the tools and running a format on the drive because I was having problems (write/read errs and such). It did the same thing: Got to 600-700 megs, and then it sounded like a Manual transmission car had been thrown in reverse while going 75 down the interstate. It then did a loud noise which I cannot describe other than something like THWACK and the drive ceased making noise. It spun down in a second, and the computer paused. Then, after it had spun down completely, it spun back up to operating speed, and then spun back down and ejected, and then it flashed across the screen: OPERATION FAILED. I am sure the cart is bad, but am nervous about using the drive. Is it possible that the heads need to be fixed? Why would it have made the thwack noise? I need the drive for the work I do - the local ISP has no mac experience and they have me do some of the Mac setups. I have -pardon, HAD- all my stuff on the Jaz. I have had other problems as well - when writing a decent sized amount to the disk, The files were not all recorded in the directory, and parts of them were lost. I think I traced that one to a version of Speed Doubler, which I have consequentially removed from the system. Help?
