USA --July 13, 1997-- esp Software has just announced the release of version 1.1 of Blob Sculptor for Mac OS, a simple freeware 3-D CAD application for quickly creating 3-D "blob" or metaball objects. You can design blobs in Blob Sculptor's 3-D CAD-like environment: even get a quick wireframe preview of how the blob components will melt together to make the final blobby object. Finally, you can export your creation to one of several 3-D object file formats (POV-Ray 3, DXF, RAW, PolyRay.) The Blob Sculptor file format (".BLB" file) itself is 100% compatible with the MSDOS version of Blob Sculptor, so you can read and edit existing ".BLB" files as well. System Requirements: Blob Sculptor is a "Fat" application, so it runs native on any PowerPC, and on any 68020 or better with a floating point unit (FPU.) Apple doesn't make anything less than a 68020 anymore, but there are still lots of existing machines without FPUs, so I have included a separate 68020 non-FPU version of the application in case you have one of these computers. Note that BlobSculptor will work adequately on a non-FPU computer, but the preview display will be painfully slow. Blob Sculptor requires System 7 or better. Neither QuickTime nor QuickDraw 3D are needed to run this software. Credits: The original Blob Sculptor application is authored by Alfonso Hermida and Steve Anger on MSDOS, and this is a Mac OS conversion of their original work, with their permission of course. It should replace the English language version of Default Folder 2.7.1 in the archives. Default Folder is a shareware control panel that enhances Open and Save dialog boxes to make it easier for you to manage files on your Macintosh. It provides many of the essential features of the commercial SuperBoomerang and Directory Assistance utilities, but without the infrequently used extras that take their toll in compatibility, memory, and CPU usage. And it's now fully compatible with Mac OS 8! Default Folder's time-saving Open and Save dialog enhancements allow you to: - Set up a default folder for any or all applications. - Switch among recently used folders from a pop-up menu. - See available disk space and switch between disks from a pop-up menu. - Click on a Finder window to display it in an Open or Save dialog. - Open the folder shown in an Open or Save dialog in the Finder. - Create folders, get information (including changing name, type, and creator), and move items to the Trash from within file dialogs. - "Rebound" back to the last file you used. - Make "Replace" the default option instead of "Cancel" when saving a file with the same name as an existing file. - Speed up the display of Open and Save dialogs by turning off custom color icons in the file list. Default Folder will operate on any Macintosh running System 7 or higher, and is accelerated for PowerPC. In addition to the standard internet archives, information and updates are available at: Default Folder may be included on the UMich and Info-Mac CD-ROMs. Changes in this release: - Enabled "Click in Finder Window" for Mac OS 8. - Setting the default button to "Replace" in file dialogs now correctly draws the default border around the button in Mac OS 8. - A bug which could cause crashes on Tanzania-based Macintoshes and Mac clones has been fixed. DragThing is an application dock designed to tidy up the icons littering your desktop. Simply drag an application from the Finder onto an empty square in a dock and then drag documents onto it as normal. In addition, the docks can contain files, folders, disks, servers and URLs, and there is also an option to display the currently running processes in a special dock. DragThing requires at least System 7.5 and a Macintosh with a minimum of a Motorola 68020 or PowerPC 601 processor. These characteristics can all be set by hand, of course, but Neatnik allows you to batch-process the contents of a folder (including all levels of enclosed folders), or an entire disk. The folder window locations can be set to offset from their "parent" (containing) folder's location, so that successive levels of folders will open to "cascading", successively-offset locations on your desktop. Some word processors and other applications have a "Stack Windows" function that arranges the application's open windows in this manner. Neatnik adds this capability to the Finder, but effects the position of all folders within the folder or disk you select, whether their windows are currently open or not. Some might be inclined to doubt that the introduction of Neatnik will revolutionize Computing As We Know It, and perhaps rightly so. But it would be a mistake to dismiss Neatnik too lightly. As the bulk of data that we all have to contend with increases exponentially, any tool that helps us to organize our handling of that data becomes increasingly useful, even vital. Neatnik is one such tool. Certain specific groups of users will find Neatnik particularly helpful. Those whose work involves a great deal of folder-navigation -- perhaps on disks received from other users -- will find Neatnik an indispensable tool for keeping things... well... neat! Producers of CD-ROM and other on-disk publications could also use Neatnik to process the master copy of their disks before duplication, to ensure that the disk's folders will open in orderly and predictable locations on the end user's desktops. Neatnik was designed by Ted Van Duyn. Ted contracted Karl Bunker to implement the design, and then generously gave the copyright to the finished product back to Karl so that Neatnik could be distributed to the Macintosh community. Neatnik entirely free. Users who would like to be informed of future releases of Neatnik should consider it "emailware" and register by sending their name and e-mail address to Karl Bunker. Neatnik requires the scriptable Finder, which is part of System 7.5 and later. This is version 1.0.2 of Neatnik. The v1.0.1 update fixed a bug in v1.0 that could cause crashes when trying to set the preferences on 68K Macs, and v1.0.2 removes a "sibling offset" option that wasn't working correctly. When we 'scroll' a document, by clicking scroll bar or hiting page down, the document is not scrolled to next page. It actually 'jumps' to next page. Sometimes it is hard to find the point where we were watching, especially near the end of the document. With Pretty Scroll, it is easier. Since the scrolling process is animated, we can follow the movement and find the last point easily. You can toggle on/off on the fly, no need to restart. You can also adjust the extent of each scrolling step. This is a FileMaker Pro productivity tool for enhancing working with ScriptMaker. If you are a FileMaker Pro 3.0 user or developer and write ScriptMaker scripts this small application can save you a lot of time. ProMaker Utils makes it possible to paste an entire ScriptMaker script (all steps) from a TEXT file into a FileMaker Pro script. No more clicking until your hands hurt, just enter them in one go! New features in version 0.9.5: - Added support for Pop up options. - Added support for Specify Calculation options. How does it work? - Open FileMaker Pro and the script you want to paste the steps in. - Use ProMaker Utils to open a TEXT file with the script-steps in it (some sample text files are included). - Enter the complete script by pressing command-E. ProMaker Utils will bring FileMaker to the front and start pasting the steps into the selected script. It is that simple. System Requirements Macintosh with 68030 or better or Power Macintosh. System 7.1 or later (also tested on the upcoming 8.0 release). ProMaker Utils requires 750 Kb of RAM. ProMaker Utils doesn't use a patch or an extension so no potential conflicts there. Of course you need a copy of FileMaker Pro, this should be version 3.0v4, or an International version. IMPORTANT: Please update to v4: At the moment no support for older versions is given. You should update FileMaker to the v4 version before using ProMaker Utils (updating is a good idea anyway, as it fixes some nasty bugs). These updaters can be found at: or at . RAM disks are a convenient way to achieve high performance in many applications. Hard drive accesses are hundreds of times slower than memory accesses. RAM disks set aside an amount of memory that the system can then use as a "normal" hard drive, floppy drive, or any other storage device -- except that they're much faster. ramBunctious maintains the advantages and eliminates the disadvantages of most RAM disk programs. Several options let you customize for your desired balance of speed, security, safety, and versatility. For example, you can set it to write through to a file on a (real) disk for safety in the event of a crash. You can mount as many RAM disks as you wish (or as many as you have memory for) simultaneously. ramBunctious uses the same memory that applications use, so the memory used for each RAM disk is instantly available for other applications as soon as the RAM disk is put away. ramBunctious 1.1.2 is a maintenance update. System 7.6.1 introduced a conflict with huge FSWrite's on some configurations; ramBunctious now implements huge FSWrite's as a series of smaller FSWrite's to avoid the problem. A full description of ramBunctious is available by running the "ramBunctious manual" document included in this package. It was designed with the input and assistance of a school nurse, to meet specific needs. It handles tracking of contact information, thirteen different types of immunizations, medical history, allergies, medications, injuries, hospitalizations, chronic health conditions, and recent illnesses. You can track testing of hearing, vision, physical exams, scoliosis screening, oral exams, and blood pressure throughout the educational history of the child. Users with access to a digital camera or scanner can easily add a photograph of the child to the record which can be an important aid in finding missing children, as well as putting a face on the data. Most important, it's easy to use. School Nurse was designed with a similar appearance to the paper folders and forms currently used in public schools. Sheldon" Subject: Anderson (Q) So Gil Gilberto says that Apple has scattered its efforts too much after he had to lay off a bunch of people. Sounds very familiar to me. Might convince a bunch of airhead stockholders. Not me. When I worked at Rockwell Space division they had evidentally been in what (much later I heard in a Supercollider lecture) called matrix management phase. This is one phase a company goes through, in a cycle it must go through to live. When you are in each phase, it can become a politically correct dogma. In my view, that is a dirty shame. It should not be taken seriously. It is just something that happens and then the dogma is just water under the bridge and you're on to the next phase. When I came into the job during matrix management phase at Rockwell, we were told if we voted right and against the union (UAW), the company would educate us. We would get shuffled between groups and learn all their specialties. Not one guy on top of us, a matrix of guys to teach us and provide learning experiences. That's matrix management. On management side, we would diversify our educational experience, whereas the autoworker's union would have us have job security in some sort of feudal system where we would get stuck with a role rather than freedom in our career. Two years the unions lost and then management's tune changed when they lost a bit of money, quite a bit. I started hearing insiders saying, "pity the company has found nothing to specialize you in". What they had originally promised me as a perk became my burden on the company. Their pitch became their pity. Long since then I have studied many things with my own money and tried not to feel too guilty about that. Some time during or after their change of tune, a fellow named Anderson was CEO of Rockwell. Now an Anderson is a CFO of apple. This worries me a bit. I sincerely that neither Anderson originated that judgement against matrix management phase. If you stop a phase, you stop a cycle. If you stop a cycle, you stop a company. Pass through phases, have your dogmas along the way if you must, but let them dogmas go. I hope sincerely that apple employees will continue to be as diverse a crew of "misfits" as they have been and that they continue to be the learning edge of the computer community. I hope that such strong talk has been somewhat heartening and no, I don't want to be the CEO. ;-) I had written a bit more humor, but fear that I discount myself doing so and would waste bandwidth. Maybe someone could clarify this phase cycle thing better than I. That's OK. I don't imagine to have things down perfect. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 01:42:15 -0400 (EDT) From: LJToots@aol.com Subject: any suggestions? I picked up a LaserWriter IINTX at a hamfest over the weekend, and am wondering about upgrading the memory in it. The simms used seem to be in sets of 8 256K each, but they are neither 30 or 72 pin...look to be 64 or 68 pin. The vendors I spoke with, including the one who had the used LaserWriters, had no idea where to find the simms for it...and I'd prefer to keep the investment low. Does anyone have a dead one they're willing to sell simms from, or know of a source for cheap simms for these printers? Or for that matter, a source for a manual for one (is the manual posted on the web anywhere, since it seems to be out of print)? Thanks in advance. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Jul 1997 12:17:38 -0400 (EDT) From: Mercibeate@aol.com Subject: Partition Question Hi All, I recently reformatted my internal drive and for the first time I chose to partition it. I made a relatively small system partition of 60 megs of which about 6 megs are free. The only other partition is about 640 megs and contains all of my data and applications. Everything is working out fine _except_ when I try to install a new software package, there often isn't enough room on the system disk for a full installation and if I try to install on the other disk, I usually get a message stating that the installer needs access to the system disk. I'm trying to save disk space by working with partitions, so I don't really want to enlarge the system disk just for installations. Is there a workaround here, or should I just go back to one large unpartitioned HD? Thank you in advance for any and all comments or suggestions!
