I've found situations when nothing could beat Netscape (and I hate ftp'ing via Netscape), others when Anarchie was the absolute champ, and also some when Fetch or NetFinder were on the top. If you like it that way: yes, Anarchie is more different from the other ftp clients then are the others from each other. I am currently a user of TOAST by Adaptec, >but it doesn't support that type of signal. > It is likely that the signal from a magnetic phono pickup is too week to be used directly for this purpose, Also, there is a matter of the proper equalization. But, one could use a mag phono preamp, or a hi-fi amp with mag phone input. Then connect the line-out from the amp to the audio input of the Mac. As for the proper plugs and sockets, Radio Shack, or other electronic distributors, can supply the needed connectors and adaptors. I don't think Toast will digitize the sound and save it as a file. There are numerous recording programs, though. Quick Recorder is available from the Info Mac Archives, and the shareware price is quite low. I have used it. There is a problem though. In order to put the recorded music files on a CD, the recording must be sampled at 44KHz. And, for fidelity, one would want 16-bit digitizing. If you pick "stereo" mode, the sampling data rate may be too high for saving to hard disk. I was digitizing songs from a CD, and had to save the data into RAM disk in order to have a high enough data-save rate. That means that one must have enough RAM disk space to hold at least one complete song. With 80Meg RAM disk, I think I was able to capture about 7 minutes of music. As each song was completed, it was copied to hard disk. When I had enough "tracks" to fill a CD (up to 650 Meg) I used Toast to burn the CD. It will be interesting to see what other info comes in on this subject. croton@ridgecrest.ca.us Cyrus Roton Ridgecrest Apple User Group Electronic Musical Instrument Technician ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Aug 1998 10:56:17 EDT From: Luskin@aol.com Subject: delrina daily planner 3.0 extension? Evidently your software is leaving the serial (modem) port connection open, which apparently won't allow the computer to shutdown or restart until it's closed. There are several utilities for forcing closed a recalcitrant serial port. I currently use PortView, by MegaWolf software (freeware), but there are several others such as CommCloser, probably available on Info-Mac. Sorry, I can't point you to the exact locations. You might also try turning off TCP/IP, if that's the kind of connection you were making. However, this may not work. Hope this helps. I had occasional similar problems with an older MO and an SE/30. I suspect it's SCSI related, and that the Zip might complicate matters. Try it without the Zip and also without the Zip driver active. What system version are you using? If it's pre-7.6, you should ensure that you've got the newest version of the SCSI Manager extension (3.6?); that's important. I'd also suggest you try changing the address of the MO, then try changing termination--remove it if it's there, or add it if it's not (you MUST power down before messing with SCSI plugs!). You can also try changing the order of devices on the chain, and perhaps moving the terminator to the middle of the chain. Ultimately, I determined that my SE/30's SCSI bus was a bit old fashioned and not as flexible as newer ones, but it could be coerced into working, and I feel that you're in the same boat. Hope this helps. Cheers, -- Gib Henry ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 2 Aug 1998 09:42:15 +0100 From: Mike Blackwell Subject: Quickbooks 4.0 Fatal Error message -- please help! I use Quickbooks 4.0 on a 240MHz PowerMac clone, 64MB/4gig, System 7.6.1, to do the bookkeeping for our company. Recently, when trying to edit an old invoice, QB put up a dialog box reading: Fatal Error: V 4.0 M11 (M=1112, L=3800, C=43, V=-1 (FFFFFFFF)) I was able to (temporarily) bypass the problem by deleting the bad invoice, creating a new client listing with the same name, and creating a new invoice to replace the old one. However, when it happened again a couple days later with a different client, I did the same thing, but I found I was unable to fix the problem. I am also no longer able to generate A/R reports (Aging Detail, Open Invoices, etc.), since I get the same (I think it's the same) fatal error message. And even more recently, it's been producing that error whenever I try to use the QuickRegister to look at a client's account. QuickBooks tech support wants $35 just to answer the phone, so I'm turning to my less expensive alternatives. :) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Aug 1998 11:39:28 -0400 (EDT) From: Art Werschulz Subject: RealPlayer problems Hi.
