First is a game of simulated dog races where you can bet and collect your winnings. Next it's a handicapping program for picking dogs in real races. Lastly you can enter the winners from your local track so the handicapping part can "learn". I searched everywhere and could not find a dog handicapping program for the Mac, so I made one. The result of 3 different books on handicapping dogs. It requires some data input from you and then "learns" your particular dog track. It's also a game that you can play with a sum of pretend money. Make your bets, and then watch the "dogs" run around the track as you root for the one or more that you've bet on. FREEVERSE RELEASES HEARTS DELUXE MICROSOFT HUMBLED NEW YORK-Freeverse Software today announced the release of the latest versions of their popular card game Hearts Deluxe for Mac and PC. Freeverse Software is arguably the smallest software company with the possible of exception of "Timmy, the 7th-Grade Hacker." Nevertheless, they have consistently released board and parlor games of the highest quality. Previous releases of Hearts Deluxe have received rave reviews from Ziff-Davis Interactive, MacWorld/MacUser, PC Computing, and C/NET among others This success has not gone unnoticed in Redmond. Perhaps in response to Freeverse's fierce competition, Microsoft has chosen to bundle a free copy of their unremarkable program "MS Hearts" with Windows 95. While it may be possible to remove MS Hearts without breaking Windows 95, we have been afraid to try. We are undaunted. Our Hearts Deluxe features a rich 3-D perspective, variable skill levels, a full tutor mode, opponents ranging from Bill Clinton to the Mad Hatter, a Boss Coming feature, full manual and strategy guide. The Macintosh version also features telepathy and voice recognition. Hearts Deluxe 5.0 for Macintosh requires three megabytes of RAM and System 7.0 or later. Hearts Deluxe 2.0 for Windows requires three megabytes of RAM and Windows 3.x, 95 or NT. Hearts Deluxe is available as shareware or in a CD-ROM version. It is available from WWW.FREEVERSE.COM or wherever better shareware is found. Freeverse Software is a leading developer and publisher of shareware computer games for the Macintosh and PC. Freeverse is the recipient of numerous industry awards and has been featured in WIRED magazine and TIME DIGITAL among others. Other games from Freeverse include, Enigma, Reversi: The Eclipse, X-Words Deluxe, CrossCards and Burning Monkey Solitaire, as well as the forthcoming Spades Deluxe. Freeverse is also the maker of the popular anti-productivity suites "JARED: Butcher of Song" and "SimStapler '98." A great big hearty thanks to every one of the fourteen who helped me out with my Sad Mac problem. I just wanted to let others on the list know there is an answer, I did get it fixed, and I am once again flabberghasted by the support of this group. I've read others get great help but I never needed to ask before. It is, for me, a measure of the health of the Macintosh user community that help is a message away and the collective knowledge of the group far outstrips anything I have on hand. Whenever I get depressed reading the cynical press about the sad state of Macintosh affairs I turn to the Info-Mac Digest and get that tingly feeling all over again about the potential for major change in the way people do 'computing' and the way communities operate on the internet. I certainly don't see this kind of cohesive and reassuring support from the Wintel community. I get derision and snide references to "that poor guy who still uses a Mac". I am also damn proud to have been using my vintage Mac II at home since 1988 with little more serious trouble than my Sad Mac problem to deal with over these many years. The very fact many of my wintel using co-workers are on their third or fourth PC in that same time speaks volumes to the value for the dollar I invested that one-time. When I finally get my G3 (which is so very close I can taste it) I am expecting to see another decade of value and simple to operate design from the people at Apple Corp. It sounds as if your System File has gone to the dogs... 1. The simple solution is to reinstall the system files, "System" and probably also "Finder". 2. You should also run Disinfectant to check for viruses and damaged files afterwards. Delete the damaged files. Replace them with backups. 3. And to be on the safe side: Run Norton Disk Doctor (of Mactools if you use System 7.0/7.1. Have not seen Mactools for System 7.5 and later) 4. The cause of System File errors can be several: The computer has stopped to work while it was writing information to the System file. You discover your first sad Mac normally after a crash. The most common causes are: a.) One-time write errors. b.) Newly installed ill-behaving programs and extensions. Or a "golde oldie" that needs to be reinstalled in a up-to-date version... c.) Scssi-cable that is too long and thin. d.) Bogus-RAM. Installed extra RAM-connectors need to rubbed with a clean rubber eraser with no charcoal-lead on it. It probably has oxide on it that block/stop the low-voltage eletricity going to and from tha RAM-expansion cards. Dealers charge 1000-nds in our Norwegian currency for this every year and walk away from their warranties if they find out that you have done the same as they do. Run the freware Tech Tool to check your RAM. e.) Computer viruses. If it is 4d it will not be long until your Mac refuses to start at all. Good luck, Dave! I recently scanned an image using a PC and I wish to use the image in Illustrator on the Mac. I saved the image in numerous formats (TIF, PCX, JPG, BMP, EPS etc) using both the scanning software and Paint Shop Pro on the PC. These were then copied to the Mac using PC floppy disk. However, when I try and read them in using Illustrator, I either get an error saying format not recognised or an error during decompression, etc. I'm sure Illustrator has the plug-ins to this as it filters for the graphics files it knows. I have also tried QuarkXpress and Photoshop V5 (?) and MacDraw and I think one of the file formats load with out an error but it was just garbage. When I copy the files across to the H/D they always come up as PC EXCHANGE. Also I sometime get the error cannot find the application PC EXCHANGE (I think). This is present and enabled on the control panel. Do I need to do something with Apple Exchange application to convert the files ? I know the formats are standard as an image created and saved on the Mac loads straight up on the PC with no problems. What am I doing wrong ? Thanks in advance Sean P.S. You recently posted information about a patch to Corel WordPerfect 3.5, called WordPerfect 3.5e Updater. The patch was in the form of a VISE file, made by software from a company called MIndVision. I double clicked on the patch file, and got a message to the effect that "The default location for this install could not be found. This install will be cancelled." The file containing the patch had no information with it. I tried to use the patch file in and out of the wordPerfect folder, with the name of the target file changed to that of the patch file...., no use. I then downloaded the VISE document from the MindVision web site. It had no information whatsoever for me. I then emailed MindVision tech support, and received a rather sour and not at all helpful note from a Tom Leonard, laughably a support person at MindVision. While it is true that MindVision has no control over what its customers do, he might have had a suggestion or two. Or a better tone. So, does anyone know how to apply the WordPerfect 3.5e Updater patch to Corel WordPerfect 3.5? Thanks. Michael B.
