These strings are meant for use with Macintosh computers. Upon registering, Version 2.1 will allow you to do the following: * Test INITialization strings through your Mac's modem * View string information from Open Transport/PPP/ARA Scripts * View the URL of the modem manufacturer allowing you to launch the URL using an Internet Browser (you MUST have Internet Config 1.4 [or later] installed and configured on your Macintosh in order to launch a URL. Internet Config 1.4 is not included with the Mac INIT Strings Installer. Internet Config can be downloaded from ftp://ftp.share.com/internet-configuration/ ). * Analyze an INITialization string and see what each command means Mac INIT Strings requires the Apple Serial Tool 1.0.2 which is part of the Apple Communications ToolBox (CTB). The installer will place a copy of the Serial Tool 1.0.2 in your Extensions Folder requiring you to restart your machine after the installation process is complete. Mac INIT Strings was built with Mac OS 8.1 and is therefore, Mac OS 8.1-compatible. You need System 7.5 (or later) and 4 MB of physical (installed) memory in order to use Mac INIT Strings. Shareware Info: At one time, Mac INIT Strings was freeware. Due to the number of hours and research that have gone into Mac INIT Strings 2.1, we've decided to make it our first shareware package with a $15.00 shareware fee. Please be sure to read the license agreeement included in the installer package. You must pay for this software in order to use all of it's features. Please support shareware - without paying for this software, there won't be another release. Known Bugs/Limitations/Fixes: * Registered users of Version 2.1 can view Open Transport/PPP/ARA Modem Scripts however, they cannot be edited. We've done this for a reason - mainly because we don't want to receive hundreds of e-mails and telephone calls from people needing help with either editing these scripts or putting them back together. * In previous versions, some users reported that although the Serial Tool was installed in the Extensions Folder, Mac INIT Strings could not see the Serial Tool. Make sure that the Serial Tool is in fact, named "Serial Tool" - Mac INIT Strings looks for this file by name, not by creator. This problem should now be resolved with the release of Version 2.1. * If you experience a "Port is in use by another application" or "Serial Port is busy" message, disable your fax software or any extensions and control panels that may use the serial port(s) on your Macintosh. * When Mac INIT Strings indicates that an initialization string is "OK", this does not necessarily mean that the string is in fact, the correct string (ie: many modems can use a generic initialization string such as "AT&F1"). The database consists of recommended strings. Many of the strings contained in this database have been contributed by users. Some have been confirmed by manufacturers. The rest are the result of a lot of research on the Internet. We've done our best to provide the correct ones but we don't have 150 different modems to test all of these strings on! * We cannot guarantee that all of the INIT Strings contained in the database will be 100% accurate. Some modem manufacturers have been kind enough to e-mail us a complete list of all of their modems and INIT Strings. Thank you for doing so. We encourage all of the manufacturers listed in the database to do the same. * The Mac INIT Strings Installer will now install the software on Macs and PowerBooks equipped with black and white displays. * Thank you to everyone for contributing your INIT Strings. We've received hundreds from all around the world and your feedback has been greatly appreciated. Thanks and most of all - have fun. That's what the Mac's all about. Long live Apple. The initial result of this is ASHCAN, a war game. Ashcan pits your destroyer against an enemy submarine. You have ten "ashcans" remaining with which to sink him. The trick is in determining the correct depth. Actually, at this stage I am knocking the rust off of the BASIC programming that I did in high school, in the mid '70s. Fittingly, ASHCAN is a remake of a program I wrote back then, only with graphics and sound added, the likes of which we didn't dream of in those days (that version of ASHCAN was a simple text and command line interface--printing out on PAPER, no less!). Deskpop is a Control Strip module which lists all volumes, folders and files currently on the Mac's desktop. This is especially useful for the (hopefully short) time the desktop is cluttered. Folders are displayed with the underline style. Volumes (a.k.a. Disks) are displayed with the bold bold+underline style. The Trash is displayed with the bold style. You often run more applications at the same time? You wish you could quit one or more applications without having to make them active first? You would like to know their memory sizes without having to display the About This Computer box? You would love to have your largest unused memory block size always under your eyes? If so, then MaBaSoft Quit CSM is what need. MaBaSoft Quit CSM is a module for the control strip that displays memory information (largest unused block and application sizes) and enables you to quit applications without having to make them active. You can quit a single application, all background applications or all running applications. MaBasoft Quit CSM is 5 US$ shareware. It available from the MaBaSoft ftp site at ftp://macware.erehwon.org/pub/by_author/MaBaSoft/Quit_CSM_1.3.1.sit and from all major Macintosh shareware ftp sites. System Requirements MaBaSoft Quit CSM runs on all types of Mac and needs System 7.1.1 or higher. Control Strip, Extensions Strip or Desktop Strip need to be installed. Minimum Extensions Strip version supporting Quit CSM is v1.5.2. --------------------------------------- What's new in MaBaSoft Quit CSM v1.3.1? Quit CSM is now Extensions Strip-savvy. The module is Xed off in the strip if loaded with Extensions Strip v1.5.1 or lower. Under Extensions Strip v1.5.2 or higher the Extensions Strip application is filtered out, so that the "Quit Others" and "Quit All" commands can be safely performed. Under Extensions Strip, Quit CSM can quit applications which do not support Apple Events (i.e. developed before the introduction of System 7.0), to. The limitation persists when Quit CSM is running under Control Strip or Desktop Strip. A bug causing the memory bar to be incorrectly drawn on computers with video cards not supporting pixel depth 1 (i.e. b&w) has been fixed. The memory bar was drawn in plain black independently of the current monitor setting. A bug concerning the memory bar color has been fixed. Although intended especially for piano and accordian which use a keyboard, the principals can be applied to all musical instruments. MusicMentor shows a note on a music stave and asks the user to click on the corresponding key on the three-octave piano keyboard within a certain time. MusicMentor will continue to display notes until it reaches the user-selected number of notes per test, then it will give a percentage and show the results on a bar graph, as well as showing a list of the notes the user got wrong, seperated into left and right hands. The user can change the amount of time allowed for each note, and also decide whether to be tested on whole notes, sharps/flats, or both. The beginner can choose to have the note letters shown on the keyboard, while a more advanced player can have the letters invisible for a more challenging test. MusicMentor remembers and tests more frequently on the notes which the user got wrong previously. Music students should find MusicMentor useful for memorizing all the notes on the scale, including sharps and flats, and teachers should find the game useful for review with their students. System requirements: * HyperCard 2.1 or later * 219K hard disk space * 600x400 (or larger) black and white or color monitor MusicMentor may be included in any CD-ROM, provided I get a copy of the CD.
