Smart Scroll enhances scrollbars for most apps, including Netscape, Emailer, Eudora, ClarisWorks... (Mac OS 8.5, 8.6, & 9.X) only enhance the Finder's scrollbars) Proportional Thumbs: The size of the thumb relative to the scrollbar shows how much of a document is displayed in a window! Live Scrolling moves the window contents while you drag the thumb. Power up your scroll bars! Scrolling Speed may now be adjusted for all scroll bars and menus! If your windows are too fast for your taste, this will let you set a comfortable scrolling speed. The setting is applied whenever you click in a scrollbar and hold the button down, as well as when dragging in text fields and across window edges. This feature controls Menu Scrolling too! Keep the cursor pinned to the edge of the screen above or below the menu, or bring it in a few pixels to slow down the scrolling to the rate selected in the Smart Scroll control panel. This control panel works on any Mac introduced since 1990, running System 7.0 through Mac OS 9.0. New in version 3.7b1: *New: Scrolling Speed control now works for dragging in text fields and across window edges. *Smoother scrolling in other situations. *Misc changes and fixes Mac OS 8.5 and later provide applications with the possibility of displaying proportional thumbs, but applications will need to be updated to take advantage of the new feature. Among applications included with Mac OS, so far only the Finder and a couple others uses this feature. Smart Scroll provides proportional thumbs for "the rest of apps" today, without updating applications applications such as Netscape, Emailer, AppleWorks, Word or system add-ons such as control panels! Smart Scroll communicates with Kaleidoscope so scrollbars using the new color schemes can be proportional and have active scrolling! It is also a database including information about your system environment. You see not only some technical infos but also understandable interpretation of most codes (in English). There are too many new features in GestLab to be listed here (a mini doc is included). You have to know that GestLab user interface needs at least Appearance Manager 1.0.1 (version found in Mac OS 8.1 and next). So, if your machine has at least Mac OS 8.1, use GestLab. With older systems, continue to use Gestalt.Appl. GestLab main goal is to maintain the more exhaustive Gestalt selector database. When using it, if your configuration is displaying info not yet in the database (what it is very easy to realize, this info is displayed in red), don't hesitate to send it to me: I'll analyse it and update the database for the next release. Your collaboration is essential in this domain. Version 1.1b3 features a database separated from application, direct links to author's Web site to update database and application, modification of Gestalt values and better theme support. I trashed the Appletalk control panel after finding that every time I would turn on Appletalk my computer would restart saying the Finder had an error trying to boot. This all started with MacOS 9.0.0 on my Powerbook G3/233 with 512k backside (the Wallstreet). In anycase, now that I've upgraded to MacOS 9.0.4 I was hoping to try Appletalk again so I could do peer to peer networking between my 7200 and my Powerbook. Appleshare only wants to work via serial networking. But nowhere can I find the Appletalk control panel in my custom installer of MacOS 9 that is part of the MacOS 9 CD. I don't want to reinstall the whole OS just to get Appletalk back. It was Appletalk that in the first place under MacOS 9.0.0 forced me to reinstall the MacOS everytime I turned it on! So if somebody could send me a working copy of the Appletalk control panel and any associated extensions that are necessary for it to work in MacOS 9.0.4, please e-mail me first that you are sending it, and how big the file is, and I will contact you back if somebody else has already sent it, or if you can go ahead and send it. Oh by the way, reading the http://www.macintouch.com message board I learned that the Chooser is not the place in MacOS 9.0.4 to disable Appletalk, rather the Appletalk control panel is, according to the help files that are on MacOS 9.0.4. I already knew that starting with MacOS 8.6, Appletalk shouldn't be turned off from the control strip either. So it looks like if I want any Appletalk functionality I will need the most current version of the control panel. Thank you.
